Matt Capps Makes All-Star Team

Former Pirate Matt Capps has made the All-Star team as the Nationals' representative. The Pirates' decision to non-tender Capps in the offseason looks even worse now than it did at the time. It's basically been like Capps' awful 2009 season never happened, and he's gone right back to his career path through 2008. Capps would have been valuable to the Pirates both because of his pitching and because of what he might have brought back in a trade. Here's what I wrote about it at the time. Essentially, the Pirates need to take any opportunity they can to accumulate young talent. They should have taken the chance that Capps would bounce back and provide trade value, but they didn't, and it was only because of a few hundred thousand dollars.
