Pirates Vs. Rockies: Bucs Offense Quiet In 4-1 Loss

The Pirates lost to the Rockies 4-1 at Coors Field on Saturday thanks to an anemic offense and a poor second inning by Paul Maholm that was made worse by a couple of weak hits.

Andrew McCutchen homered to lead off the game, but ... well, that was about it for the Pirates offense. The Rockies scored all their runs in the fourth inning, beginning with a double to deep left by Carlos Gonzalez. Jose Lopez then had a bunt single, and Seth Smith hit a weak single of his own to drive in Gonzalez. Catcher Chris Iannetta then drove everyone home with a three-run homer.

Maholm got plenty of ground ball outs after that, but it was too late, as the Pirates' offense vanished, hitting into double plays in three straight innings from the fifth inning to the seventh. Jason Hammel earned the win with seven innings and one run.

Controversial 2007 first-round pick Danny Moskos made his major-league debut and pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Pirates.
