2012 NHL All-Star Game Recap: Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, And James Neal All Have Points As Team Chara Wins

The 2012 NHL All-Star game is in the books, and Evgeni Malkin's Team Chara came out with the 12-9 win over Team Alfredsson. Malkin scored the second goal of the game just minutes into the first period, beating Henrik Lundqvist on a beautiful puck-handling play and flip past the Rangers' superstar goalie.

Both Kris Letang and James Neal added points for Team Alfredsson, putting all three Pens on the board in the first forty minutes. Letang assisted a Henrik Sedin score while Neal provided the feed on a Jason Pominville blast. It was the first time three Penguins had a point in the All-Star Game since 1996, when Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, and Ron Francis completed the feat. Letang also passed Paul Coffey for the most points by a Pittsburgh defenseman in the All-Star Game.

Marian Gaborik of the New York Rangers was named the MVP.

NHL All Star Game 2012: Video Of Evgeni Malkin Goal That Gives Team Chara An Early 2-0 Lead

The Pittsburgh Penguins Evgeni Malkin gave Team Chara an early 2-0 lead in the 2012 edition of the NHL's All Star Game. Malkin beat Henrik Lundqvist from a bad angle for the score. Geno is playing better hockey than anyone in the world right now, and it didn't take long to make an impact in today's game among the league's best.

Skating down the right wing, Malkin controlled a pass from Jarome Iginla on his skate, moved it over to his stick and then quickly flipped it past Lundqvist. The All Star Game is full of highlights, but it doesn't make Malkin's dazzling play any less impressive.

2012 NHL All-Star Game: Evgeni Malkin, James Neal, Kris Letang Represent Penguins Sunday

The 2012 NHL All-Star Game between Team Chara and Team Alfredsson will take place at 4:00 PM Eastern on Sunday on NBC Sports Network. From the Penguins, Evgeni Malkin will play for Team Chara, while James Neal and Kris Letang will be on Team Alfredsson.

Neal and Letang will have the fans in Ottawa behind them -- team captain Daniel Alfredsson drafted his Senators teammates Milan Michalek, Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza. Ottawa native Claude Giroux will also play for Team Alfredsson.

"I’m obviously very happy to get all the Senators," said Alfredsson. "I didn’t know for sure if (Chara) was going to pick the Canucks or not, so I kind of played it that way. Nothing was planned, but I wanted to make sure I got Erik (Karlsson) and Jason (Spezza). I would have maybe liked to have one of Malkin or Datsyuk, but I got Giroux and I was really happy with that. It was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it."

Zdeno Chara drafted Malkin in the third round. Before Malkin came Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk and Bruins goalie Tim Thomas.

The 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend officially began on Thursday when Team Chara and Team Alfredsson chose their teams, but the real fun begins Saturday with the Skills Competition. A quick rundown of the six events, some individual and some team-related, that will occur Saturday evening in Ottawa, beginning at 7:00 P.M. ET:

Fastest Skater: Five players from each team compete in a series of heats to determine who is the fastest.

Breakaway Challenge: A goalie and three shooters from each team participate, as players attempt three shots, looking to score a goal in the most impressive way possible. Judges vote on the goal-scoring attempts.

Hardest Shot: The player who shoots the puck the hardest, measured in MPH, wins. Captain Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins has won this event four years in a row.

Elimination Shootout: The basics of the game: players attempt to score a goal against the goaltender and move on to the next round.

2012 NHL All Star Draft: James Neal Taking By Team Alfredsson In 14th Round

The final Pittsburgh Penguin All-Star to be selected in Thursday night's fantasy draft was James Neal. Daniel Alfredsson and co-captain Henrik Lundqvist took Neal in the fourteenth round. He joins Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang on Alfredsson's team and will face off against Evgeni Malkin. Neal and Malkin have had incredible success this season playing on the same line, so it will be interesting to see them on opposite sides.

For the complete draft results, please check out the SB Nation's NHL All-Star game StoryStream.

Neal was the last player named to the All-Star rosters, replacing the Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin. He got the call to go to Ottawa just one day before the draft. He has already equaled his career-high of 27 goals in just a half-season. With Neal's selection, all the PIttsburgh Penguins are now off the board in the draft. It was an impressive showing with two players going in the first five rounds.

2012 NHL All-Star Draft: Team Chara Selects Evgeni Malkin With Third Pick, Team Alfredsson Takes Kris Letang With Fifth Pick

It didn't take long for Evgeni Malkin to come off the board at the NHL's All Star Game fantasy draft. Malkin, who's scored 17 goals in 21 games, was the third selection by captain Zdeno Chara and co-captain Joffrey Lupul. Chara selected Pavel Datsyuk with the first overall pick, and then went with his teammate and goaltender Tim Thomas with their second pick.

For the complete draft results, please check out the SB Nation's NHL All-Star game StoryStream.

After Daniel Alfredsson's team took Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza, it was time for Malkin to come off the board. Geno is the hottest player on the planet right now, so it's no surprise he went so high among the best players in the world. Some even thought it was too low, with Alfreddson clearly favoring his Ottawa teammates.

Kris Letang was taken by Team Alfreddson just four picks later, with their fifth pick and the tenth overall. Letang was named an All-Star after sitting out more than a month with a concussion and broken nose. With the Pens playing their best hockey of the season, it was great to see two of them go in the top ten of the draft.
