TCU vs. West Virginia 2012: Highs and lows in the Mountaineers' 3rd straight loss

The West Virginia Mountaineers were again on the short end of a high-scoring Big 12 football affair Saturday, as the TCU Horned Frogs earned a 39-38 overtime victory at Mountaineer Field. The loss was the third straight for the Mountaineers (5-3, 2-3 Big East), who will more than likely drop out of the top 25 rankings on Sunday.

According to SB Nation blog The Smoking Musket, West Virginia's loss was filled with highs and lows — with one of the biggest lows being the play of quarterback Geno Smith.

Geno's struggles. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. It's a sad sight to watch a guy who is has lost his lost his MOJO. Throwing into double coverage. Telegraphing passes. Late decisions that almost get picked but certainly get knocked down. Geno is inside his head in a bad way.

Though the Mountaineers defense did eventually let the team down in critical moments, The Smoking Musket said the unit was one of the highlights of the loss.

Our defense for 3 ¾ of the game. Our much-maligned defense started with a bang (and got a standing ovation that followed) and then got a bunch of other stops. That was an impressive transformation from the previous seven games. And hello Pass Rush, where have you been all year? Good to see you again.

West Virginia will look to try it snap its three-game losing streak next Saturday when they visit the Oklahoma St. Cowboys in a Big 12 contest. The game time and broadcast information has yet to be determined.
