Penn State has a trio of individual national champions following Ed Ruth's 13-2 win against Stanford's Nick Amuchastegi on Saturday night in the 174-pound title bout at the NCAA wrestling championships in St. Louis.
The sophomore, a Harrisburg native, clinched a perfect season (31-0) with the victory, a year after taking home a third-place finish at 174 pounds. The All-American defeated Jim Resnick of Rider, Dorian Henderson of Missouri, Nick Heflin of Ohio State and Logan Storley of Minnesota ahead of the championship win.
Ruth now joins senior Frank Molinaro (149 pounds) and fellow sophomore David Taylor (165 pounds) as individual national title winners for the Nittany Lions. Quentin Wright will try to give Penn State a fourth championship win in the 184-pound final. Coach Cael Sanderson's team wrapped up the team title during the morning session on Saturday.
