Ron Everhart To Join WVU Staff, According To Report

Former Duquesne Dukes head coach Ron Everhart has accepted an assistant coaching job with the West Virginia Mountaineers, according to a report by Jenn Menendez of the Post-Gazette.

Everhart was fired from his job on March 23 after coaching Duquesne for six seasons. Everhart is originally from Fairmont, WV, about 30 minutes away from the West Virginia campus, and has had a longstanding relationship with Mountaineers head coach Bob Huggins.

Everhart joins a team now that made the Final Four two years ago and has made four straight NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament appearances. There were only two seniors on the men's team this year for West Virginia (although those two, Kevin Jones and Truck Bryant, were very important players), so Everhart joins a pretty experienced basketball team despite the Mountaineers' loss in a second round tournament game against Gonzaga back in March.

Jim Ferry New Duquesne Basketball Coach, According To Report

Jim Ferry is the new head basketball coach for the Duquesne basketball team, according to multiple reports. The hire ends a 17-day coaching search for the program after it fired Ron Everhart.

Ferry brings in an impressive resume from his past 10 seasons as head coach at Long Island where he was a two-time Northeastern Conference Coach of the Year (2005, 2011). Just this past season, Ferry helped lead Long Island to a 25-9 overall record and its second consecutive NEC title.

Last week, Kentucky Wildcats assistant coach and former Pittsburgh player Orlando Antigua was a popular name to fill the head coaching vacancy, but those reports fizzled.

As for Ferrry, the man is about to get paid.

Duquesne Coaching Search: Long Island's Jim Ferry A Target, According To Report

Duquesne basketball let go of coach Rob Everhart and are now searching for a new head basketball coach. With all NCAA tournaments over and completed, the full coaching search can now begin. One coach Duquesne is targeting is Long Island head coach Jim Ferry, according to a report by Jerry DiPaola.

Jim Ferry has been the head coach of the Long Island Blackbirds since the 2002 season, after previously coaching Adelphi, and Plymouth State. Ferry has a overall record of 150-149 with Long Island and has made the NCAA Tournament twice, with a record of 0-2 in the tournament. Fans of Pittsburgh basketball have seen plenty of his LIU teams, thanks to LIU's confrontations with Robert Morris in the Northeast Conference.

Orlando Antigua In Running For Duquesne Coaching Position, But Does He Want It?

Ron Everhart was let go by Duquesne a couple of weeks ago, and now that the NCAA Tournament is over, they can get to the business of finding a new head man in earnest. One of the candidates whose name is being bandied about is Kentucky assistant and former Pitt player Orlando Antigua. According to Cardiac Hill, he might even be among the frontrunners, but would Antigua find the Kentucky job appealing enough to leave Kentucky? John Calipari summed it up.

"Orlando is ready to be a head coach if that's what he chooses to be. The issue is, we've got a pretty good thing going here so now you have to be a little choosy on what you do."

Antigua has become a hot name because of his recruiting prowess at Kentucky, and the results are almost certainly embellished because of who he works for and the destination he is recruiting to. But if he has earned the Duquesne job after a national championship this season, maybe another stellar recruiting class and a national championship could set him up for a higher-profile gig?

Duquesne Basketball Coaching Search: Dino Gaudio Not Interested In Position

The Duquesne Dukes continue their search for a head coach following the firing of Ron Everhart on March 23. One report by Jenn Menendez of the Post-Gazette says that former Wake Forrest head coach Dino Gaudio has no interest in the position. Gaudio has was deemed a logical front runner for the job given his long-time friendship with Duquesne Athletic DIrector Greg Amodio.

Another popular candidate has been current Kentucky assistant coach, and former Pitt player, Orlando Antigua. He has had assistant coaching stints with John Calipari at Memphis in addition to Kentucky and had served as an assistant at Pitt under Jamie Dixon from 2003-2008. According to Menendez, he has not been contacted for the job as of yet, although that may change once Kentucky's season ends.

Ron Everhart Firing: Former Players Sound Off

The news that Duquesne University fired head basketball coach Ron Everhart shocked many including some of his former players.

Gary Tucker, who played under Everhart at Duquesne for the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 seasons and has played professionally overseas, had this to say about the firing on Facebook.

Screen_shot_2012-03-23_at_7

Philip Fayne, who played the same years as Tucker before his career ended due to a medical condition, left this comment under the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's article reporting the firing.

"Having been a part of the program during the Everhart Era I can say through first hand experience that Coach took heat for many things beyond his control while getting a fraction of the respect deserved for what he was able to achieve...As with any building strategy, the best way to build is to reduce your losses, and for a guy without a losing season in 5 years for a program with 20 in 21 years prior, this is unjust."

It is understandable how the players are feeling, as both Fayne and Tucker were a part of the 2007-2008 squad that brought Duquesne basketball their first winning season since 1994-1995.

Ron Everhart Fired As Duquesne's Men's Basketball Coach, School Announces

Duquesne Dukes athletic director Greg Amodio confirmed earlier reports that men's basketball coach Ron Everhart has been fired after a disappointing end to the 2011-12 season. In addition there were transfers of some of his top players. Amodio had this to say about why he fired Everhart.

Although the program has improved, our goal has always been to compete for the A-10 championship and consistently be in the hunt for high-level postseason play. I feel a change in leadership is necessary to help us refocus on that goal.

Everhart was named the head coach of the Dukes in March 2006. In six seasons he earned a 99-89 overall record, (46-50 in Atlantic 10 play). Everhart also led the Dukes to three postseason appearances in 2009, 2010 and 2011, their first postseason appearances since 1994. Everhart had this to say about his time with the Dukes.

I am very proud of the significant improvements the program made in the past six years. I am also very proud of those who played for me, both for the awards and honors they were able to achieve and for the way they represented the University.

Amodio confirmed that the search for a new head coach would begin immediately.
