Duquesne Vs. UMass Recap: Dukes Bow Out Of Atlantic 10 Tournament With First Round Loss To Minutemen

The No. 9 seed Duquesne Dukes had their season come to an end on Tuesday night in Amherst as they dropped their first round matchup with the UMass Minutemen, 92-83. Duquesne had no answers on the defensive end, as UMass hung 51 points on Ron Everhart's club in the first 24 minutes.

Eric Evans and Jerry Jones led the Dukes with 16 points a piece. Evans came in and gave Everhart a nice boost, drilling four of six three-pointers. But Sean Johnson was off all night, shooting just two of eight from behind the arc as the Minutemen continued to score at will.

UMass had three players score at least 20 points. Chaz Williams consistently had his way getting into the lane and getting to the line, shooting three more free-throws than Duquesne's entire team. The Minutemen shot 31 times from the charity stripe while the Dukes had only 11 attempts. UMass also hit 47 percent from three-point range.

Duquesne's season finishes at 16-15 while UMass will continue on to face No. 1 seed Temple in Atlantic City.

Duquesne Vs. Massachusetts Score Update: UMass Holds 51-46 Edge At Halftime

In first round action of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Basketball Tournament, the No. 9-seeded Duquesne Dukes trail the No. 8 seed Massachusetts Minutemen 51-46 at halftime in Amherst.

The high-scoring, fast-paced game has featured little defense, as both teams are shooting over 50 percent at the half. Javorn Farrell of UMass has come off the bench to lead all scorers with 13 points and has also dished out six assists. Raphiael Putney has added 12 points and shot 5-of-6 from the field in the first half.

For Duquesne, Jerry Jones also came off the bench to put in a very good opening half. He has scored 10 points and is a perfect 4-of-4 shooting including a pair of three pointers. B.J. Monteiro leads the Dukes with 11 points.

With the fast pace, turnovers down the stretch will be key in the second half. Each team committed seven turnovers, so whoever commits less in the final 20 minutes will have a much better chance to come out on top.

Atlantic 10 Tournament 2012: Bracket, Schedule And More (Evening Update - Duquesne)

The conference tournament season is well underway, but the power conferences are about to begin this week. That includes the Atlantic-10 Tournament, which gets started on Tuesday. The A-10 is different from some other conferences in that the first rounds are not played in the same location. As a result, all of the first round games will start at the same time on Tuesday, 7 pm. Here is a look at all the games that will be played on Tuesday, but you can check out the full bracket here.

The most important game for Pittsburgh ties is between Duquesne and Massachusetts. It will be played in Amherst, MA. UMass finished with a 9-7 Conference record while Duquesne wound up with a 7-9 record.

George Washington heads west to Ohio to take on Dayton in what should be the biggest mismatch of the day. GW only finished at 10-20 while Dayton had nearly twice as many wins, finishing with a 19-11 record.

Richmond will face La Salle tonight in a matchup of teams with pretty similar resumes. La Salle finished 20-10 with a 9-7 conference record while Richmond was 16-15 with a 7-9 record in the A-10.

Finally, it's Charlotte against St. Joseph's, a game in which St. Joe's should be favored pretty heavily. St. Joe's had a 9-7 conference record, while Charlotte was just 5-11.

Atlantic 10 Tournament 2012: Seniors Eric Evans & B.J. Monteiro Are Thinking Finals

As Duquesne Dukes prepare for the opening round of the Atlantic 10 tournament, seniors Eric Evans B.J. Monteiro would like to help take the team back to the conference finals, a place they last saw when Evans and Monteiro were freshmen.

"We're going to try to give our teammates positive energy and try to make sure that we can get there again," Evans told WTAE in Pittsburgh.

Both Evans and Monteiro have been an essential part of the Dukes' hoops program since that first year. Both players are career 1,000-point scorers.

The ninth-seeded Dukes play Massachusetts, the eighth seed, in the opening round on Tuesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in Massachusetts. The winner of that game will advance to face top-seeded Temple on Friday.

The Dukes beat Massachusetts 80-69 back in January.

Atlantic 10 Tournament: Duquesne Looking To Begin Run With UMass

The Duquesne Dukes find themselves stumbling into the Atlantic 10 post season, and will have a tough test ahead when they travel to Amherst for their first round matchup with the Massachusetts Minutemen.

Although the Dukes defeated UMass in the lone regular season meeting 80-69 back on January 18, Duquesne enters the tournament losing six of their last eight games.

If Duquesne wants to make it to Atlantic City, it will have to come from another stellar defensive effort against the Minutemen. The Dukes were able to force 29 UMass turnovers and score 32 points off of them.

If the Dukes can't force turnovers, they will face a tough battle. UMass edged the team out heavily in shooting and rebounding in the game, as the Minutemen hold a distinct size advantage. Duquesne will also be looking for an answer to Sean Carter, who terrorized the Dukes with 12 points and 14 rebounds in the first meeting between the two teams.

One player to keep an eye on will be senior guard Eric Evans. After going through a vicious shooting slump in February, he responded with 21 points in the team's last win, against Charlotte on February 29. The team will need him to continue stepping up in a senior role to get the job done.

The Dukes and Minutemen will play Wednesday in Amherst with a tip time of 7 p.m.
