2013 NFL Draft: Potential Steelers Targets

While the 2013 NFL Draft is a ways away, its never too early to look at possible players that a team could be interested in. The folks at Behind The Steel Curtain have compiled a list of 15 players that the Pittsburgh Steelers could be looking at to address some needs.

These positions include running back, defensive line, linebacker and secondary. The list on the Curtain's post does not include the top 15 prospects, mainly because the expectation is that the Steelers will not pick that high. The first player the Curtain has profiled is Arkansas Razorbacks running back Knile Davis.

Knile Davis has incredible speed and vision and has great cuts. He is a good pass catcher, seems decent in blocking, and has the tools to be a fantastic feature back in the NFL. However, he is coming off a major injury that kept him out for the entire 2011-2012 season and will need a strong, bounce-back season to solidify himself as a first round pick.

Other players that the Curtain has on their list include nose tackles Johnathan Hankins from Ohio State and Star Lotulelei from Utah, inside linebackers Manti Te'o of Notre Dame and Shayne Skov of Stanford and cornerbacks Demarcus Milliner of Alabama, Jonathan Banks of Mississippi State and Logan Ryan of Rutgers.

2013 NFL Draft: Various Pitt Players Rank Highly In Positional Projections

The 2013 NFL Draft is still in the distance, but we start getting ready for it during the Collegiate season, which will begin this fall. The Pitt Panthers will certainly be focused on their season this year, but there are a number of players that could also be looking ahead to the NFL Draft a few months later. CBS Sports has released their early positional player rankings, and according to Cardiac Hill, there are a number of Panthers present.

Hubie Graham is rated No. 14 among all tight ends, Jarred Holley is No. 15 among all free safeties, Chris Mike is No. 19 among fullbacks and Mike Shanahan is No. 20 among wide receivers. Again, I believe these lists only rank seniors, so you've got to take these with an even larger grain of salt. Not only are these pretty subjective and before their final season has even begun, but the lists don't take into account juniors who may come out early.

All of these rankings will certainly be in a fair deal of flux over the next handful of months, but it is a good omen for Panthers fans that they have this much talent on their roster.

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Will Pitt's Devin Street Be A First Rounder?

The 2013 NFL Draft is still a ways away, but there is no reason why we can't put out ridiculously early projections that will ultimately be proved false, probably laughably so. One of those projections says that Pitt wide receiver Devin Street could eek his way into the first round. Nobody knows Street better than our Pitt blog Cardiac Hill, let's see what they have to say about the prospect.

Many times, players go higher based on potential. But while Street has definitely shown he has big play ability and should continue to get better, I just haven't seen enough from him to make me even think he's not even going to be around in 2013. Projecting where players are going to end up is insane at this point. The NFL season isn't even close to kicking off and we have no idea what the draft order will look like. But the fact that Street is projected that high to begin with is interesting to say the least.

Street might not have the production this year that we would like to see from a first round pick, but he does have a lot of potential, meaning that he could work his way into the first round during workouts and the Combine.

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Todd McShay Has Steelers Going Tight End

With the 2012 NFL Draft done and over with, the 2013 NFL Mock Drafts are now starting to come out. The Pittsburgh Steelers addressed their offensive line in the 2012 Draft, but in the 2013 NFL Draft ESPN's Todd McShay has the Steelers adding another tight end.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers

Pick: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame

Hensley's comment: The Steelers need to start thinking of the future with Heath Miller turning 31 next season. Eifert caught 63 passes last season for 803 yards and five touchdowns.

ESPN's AFC North blogger Jamison Hensley notes that it could be time for the Steelers to think about replacing tight end Heath Miller, or at least getting prepared to do so. Some experts thought this was an area the Steelers might have addressed in the 2012 Draft.

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Matt Barkley Leads Group Of Talented Seniors

The 2012 NFL Draft was highlighted by the two quarterbacks going at the top of the board for the first time in a decade. The 2013 NFL Draft could be remembered for the same reason. Mocking The Draft has come out with their list of the top ten seniors who will be eligible for the draft, and it is led by three very talented quarterbacks. The best of them is Matt Barkley of USC.

Barkley is probably the leader of the pack for the 2013 Heisman Trophy. He would have been a top ten pick in the 2012 NFL Draft if he decided to skip his senior season at USC. By staying in school he will get his degree and also have a chance to help his top ranked team win a National Championship plus perhaps become the number one selection in the 2013 NFL Draft. Barkley is an exceptional talent playing QB.

The other quarterbacks on this list are Landry Jones of Oklahoma and Tyler Wilson of Arkansas. This doesn't even include underclassmen quarterbacks who could be very high picks as well like Tennessee's Tyler Bray or Logan Thomas of Virginia Tech. Two teams got their franchise quarterbacks in 2012, a handful more could get that opportunity in 2013.

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Several Quarterbacks Could Land In The Top 10

Ben Roethlisberger is 30 years old, and for the most part, in good health. But should the Pittsburgh Steelers be looking for a quarterback next April, the 2013 NFL Draft is going to have quite a few of them available. Behind The Steel Curtain, SB Nation's Steelers blog, recently compiled a list of the top 32 college prospects heading into the '13 draft. Headlining the group are quarterbacks Matt Barkley (USC), Tyler Wilson (Arkansas) and Tyler Bray (Tennessee), who rank No. 2, No. 5 and No. 8, respectively. Logan Thomas, a quarterback from Virginia Tech, is also listed at No. 19

As might be expected, BTSC is rather high on the Trojans' signal caller, who oddly enough is behind another former USC player in Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, who is listed as No. 1 player on the list despite health concerns.

Barkley would have been a top five pick this year and he is the favorite to be the number one pick next year. He has all the tools (big arm, good accuracy, great vision, toughness, intelligence, etc.) to become a great quarterback and depending on who is drafting number one next year, he could be the number one pick.

Should Pittsburgh again make the playoffs, it'll likely find itself picking during the latter portion of the first round, where it could, though, have the chance to select from a number of interior lineman, as the draft appears to have a bevy of them. The SBN mock draft had the team taking LSU outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo with the No. 16 pick. SI.com has the team taking Georgia defensive tackle John Jenkins.

Scouts can't help but notice the massive Jenkins when they check out Jarvis Jones. The Steelers did draft Washington nose tackle Alameda Ta'amu in the fourth round of this year's draft, but there's no guarantee they've found Casey Hampton's successor yet.

Ah, mock drafts in May.
