2012 U.S. Open Golf Prize Money: Webb Simpson Wins $1.44 Million

Webb Simpson stunned the golf world on Sunday, shooting a 68 in the final round to win the 2012 U.S. Open. The 26-year-old golfer picked up the trophy following his win. He will also receive a $1.44 million prize and all the recognition that comes with winning one of the sport's most high profile tournaments.

Second-place finishers did alright in the prize money department as well. Michael Thompson and Graeme McDowell will each take home $695,916 in prize money. McDowell was on top of the leaderboard heading into the final round of the tournament.

The top 20 finishers at the Olympic Club this weekend will take home more than $100,000, before taxes anyway. Tiger Woods, whose performance in the final two rounds pushed him down the leaderboard, will take home just over $86,000 in prize money.

2012 U.S. Open: Webb Simpson Wins A Thrilling Come From Behind Victory

Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell entered Sunday's final round of the 2012 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club tied for the lead, but both struggled in the fourth round and little known pro Webb Simpson was able to steal the victory and win his first major tournament as a professional golfer.

Simpson shot a 68 on Sunday, bogeying just two holes and making birdies on four, including three consecutive on holes six, seven and eight.

After shooting a 72 on Thursday in the first round and a 73 on Friday in the second round, Simpson seemed to have figured the course out by Saturday as he shot a 68 on the day.

U.S. Open 2012 Leaderboard: Tiger Woods Falls Apart Early During Final Round

Any chance that Tiger Woods had of capturing the 2012 U.S. Open ended Sunday afternoon with a terrible start to his final round.

Woods entered the day at three-over par, four strokes off of the lead, but went bogey-bogey to begin his round. He ended his chances then with a double bogey on hole three before finally stopping the bleeding a bit with a par on hole four. He then bogeyed on hole five, bringing his score on the day to five-over par.

The leaders, Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk, are set to tee off shortly. Their scores of minus-one are one stroke ahead of fellow contenders Fredrik Jacobson and Ernie Ells who just teed off on hole No. 1.

The full tournament leaderboard can be found here.

U.S. Open 2012 Leaderboard: Amateur Beau Hossler Emerges As One To Watch During Final Round

Although he is just 17 years old, amateur golfer Beau Hossler finds himself in contention for the 2012 U.S. Open.

After finding himself atop the leaderboard for a time on Friday, he followed up that performance by shooting an even par round on Saturday and currently sits behind leaders Jim Furyk and Graham McDowell by four strokes. He is ahead of idols Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson on the leaderboards on Sunday.

How has he done this? As a USA Today article explains, Hossler came into the weekend with a tremendous amount of confidence that has seen him through the first three rounds. When asked about whether or not he could win the whole thing after his round Saturday, he said:

"Absolutely," said Hossler, who earned a standing ovation from spectators above the historic 18th green. "There's not a doubt in my mind. Got to go out there and do everything right mentally and physically. But it's definitely out there for me."

Hossler will look to acheive the impossible when he tees off at 5:20 p.m. ET.

U.S. Open 2012 Results: Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell At 1-Under After Three Rounds

Saturday, or moving day, was supposed to be about Tiger Woods. But instead, Woods struggled from the first tee, eventually bogeying on two of his final three holes, and found himself tied for 14th after shooting 75 during the third round of the U.S. Open on Saturday in San Francisco. He had entered the day in a three-way tie for first place.

Instead, taking center stage, were both Jim Furky and Graeme McDowell, the 2010 winner. Furky shot a 68 and McDoweel an even 70 and the two stand at 1-under par heading into the final round. In third is Fredrik Jacobson, who also shot a 68 on Saturday to stay two strokes back.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard Update: Beau Hossler Shoots Even Par On Saturday

Beau Hossler might just win it. The 17-year-old amateur from Mission Viejo, Calif., shot an even-par 70 on Saturday to finish in the top-10 and within striking distance going into Sunday's final run.

Hossler, who hails from Santa Margarita High School in Southern California, had many chances to fade, yet didn't. On four separate occasions, he bogeyed before following them up with a birdie to cancel them out to stay in contention.

As it stands now, Hossler, who is 3-over par for the tournament, sits four strokes back of Graeme McDowell, who remains atop the leaderboard at 1-under par. McDowell shot a 68 on Saturday.

2012 U.S. Open Leaderboard Update: Casey Wittenberg With The Best Round Of The Tournament

The Olympic Club course at the 2012 U.S. Open has confounded golfers for the better part of two days, but Casey Wittenberg of Memphis, TN may have finally figured the course out.

Wittenberg shot a 67 on Saturday afternoon, the lowest score of the tournament thus far. He now sits at -3 under par, good for the lead at the moment with the current leaders, Tiger Woods, Jum Furyk and David Toms all teeing a little whle ago.

Wittenberg bogeyed the first and fifth holes, his only miscues of the day as he went on to make par on 12 holes, birdies on three and an eagle on the par four seventh hole. It'll be interesting to see if his score holds as the remaining golfers play their way through the course.

U.S. Open Leaderboard: Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods Tied For The Lead

Jim Furyk's solid second round showing has put him in first place at the U.S. Open at The Olympic Club. Furyk shot a one-under score for the day and was for most of the day, the only golfer at under-par for the two rounds.

After a shaky start, Tiger Woods has rebounded to tie Jim Furyk atop the leaderboard. Tiger is shooting even par for the day and is also at minus one for the tournament.

A fun story on Friday was the emergence to 17-year-old Beau Hossler atop the leaderboard for a short time Friday afternoon. He has since slid to two-over par but is still in contention.

The 2012 U.S. Open from the Olympic Club in San Francisco is living up to the expectation that it will be a hard course to play this weekend. Out of the 78 golfers that have teed it off in the first round so far, only eight golfers have scores below par.

One of the eight is Tiger Woods at two under through 15 holes. After scoring a bogey on 14, starting on the back nine, Woods has birdied 17, four and five to put him one stroke back of leader Michael Thompson.

His two partners in the marquee group, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, have not fared nearly as well. Mickelson is currently six over through 15 holes. He bogeyed the first three holes on the back nine. After earning one stroke back with a birdie on 13, Mickelson has bogeyed 14, 16, four and five.

Watson is in just as bad a shape. After scoring a birdie on 17 to pull his score back to three over, Watson double bogeyed 18 and bogeyed two and three to put him at seven over after 15 holes completed.

U.S. Open Golf 2012 Odds: Tiger Woods, European Trio Favorites At Olympic

The 2012 U.S. Open will be played at the Lake Course at The Olympic Club, a track the pros compared to nearby Oakmont as the two toughest tests for America's national championship. But Olympic has utilized a feature of another famed Open venue, Pinehurst, in that Mike Davis and the USGA have shaved down the rough around the green on seven new holes to create treacherous collection areas and fall-offs.

While there was debate about Olympic and Oakmont on Tuesday, there's no debate about the favorite heading into Thursday's first round. Tiger Woods enters the week coming off a win in Columbus at the Memorial. He clinched it with a dramatic charge over the final four holes, but he was steady all week, saving pars from six to 10 feet. That's perhaps the most important part of the game at the slog of a U.S. Open, where par is always a good score.

The top three ranked players in the world follow Woods when it comes to favorable odds this week. Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, and Rory McIlroy have all had immense success over the past two years, but only Rory has managed to win a major. They will play the first two days together in the same group. More odds for this week's Open below:

Tiger Woods 13/2
Lee Westwood 11/1
Luke Donald 11/1
Rory McIlroy 14/1
Phil Mickelson 20/1
Dustin Johnson 25/1
Jason Dufner 25/1
Justin Rose 28/1
Matt Kuchar 28/1
Adam Scott 33/1
Jim Furyk 33/1
Rickie Fowler 33/1
Zach Johnson 33/1
Hunter Mahan 40/1
Sergio Garcia 40/1
Steve Stricker 40/1
Bo Van Pelt 50/1
Bubba Watson 50/1

2012 U.S. Open: Phil Mickelson Excited To Play With Tiger Woods, Calls Pairing 'Fabulous'

As soon as the groupings for the U.S. Open were announced last week, golf fans and the media immediately began salivating over the prospects of following a Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson-Bubba Watson threesome. But what about the players? How would they react to being grouped together, and the undoubted circus atmosphere that would follow?

Tuesday is the day where players speak with the press, and all three in the power group held their press conferences at Olympic. The subject of the USGA's pairing system was an obvious topic, and all three seemed excited to play together. Woods indicated that there won't be much talking, but that's just the nature of the U.S. Open, where perfect concentration and precision are demanded on every single shot.

Mickelson was much more animated about being paired with Woods, referring to it with a prompt and empathic "fabulous" when asked. Phil said he's been battling lethargy on his Thursday and Friday rounds on Tour this year, but Woods always brings the best out of him -- a marked change from the start of their careers. It was never more evident than earlier this season when Mickelson pulled away from Woods in the final group at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. On the more practical side, Lefty also noted that they'll both have to deal with the same conditions, via Ron Sirak of Golf Digest:

"The one player I'm most concerned about if I play my best golf that may have a chance to beat me is Tiger," Mickelson said, swatting away the other 154 players in the field. "And the fact that we are on the same wavelength, I'm always in favor of. Sometimes we'll get a huge advantage in tee times, based on weather conditions or whatnot, if we're in the same wavelength, neither of us will have a distinct advantage."

Come Thursday morning, all eyes will be on this group and based on the attitude and approach taken today, it would seem Mickelson has the advantage when it comes to playing together.

US Open 2012 Tee Times And Groupings: USGA Creates Power Groups For 1st 2 Days

The USGA is famous for creating storylines with their groupings for America's national championship, often pairing some of the best players in the game or creating groups that have histories which will surely be storylines over the first two days of coverage. Mike Davis and company have done it again this year at Olympic, grouping Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Bubba Watson together. While Woods enters the week coming off a win at the Memorial, there are still questions about how his game will hold up at a major championship test. The Open consistently provides the toughest test of the season, and the Lake Course at Olympic is known for being one of the most difficult setups in the rota.

Mickeson and Watson also enter with questions. Lefty has a record five runner-ups in the U.S. Open, a championship that remains the "white whale" of his career. He enters after a WD at Muirfield Village, provoked by cellphone nuisance and "mental fatigue." Watson is playing in just his third tournament since winning the season's first major, and he was rusty in Columbus as well, coming up well short of the cut.

The USGA created a UK equivalent of that power group, putting Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy, and Lee Westwood together. All three have been ranked as the No. 1 player in the world over the past year, but only McIlroy has won a major. He. of course, enters the week looking to defend after a dominant performance in his coming-out party at Congressional CC last June. He had been looking for his form and missed three straight cuts before adding a late stop in Memphis last week, where he was in contention until he rinsed on No. 18.

Woods, Mickelson, and Watson will go off on Thursday at 10:33 a.m. ET while Donald, McIlroy, and Westwood will tee off at 4:29 p.m. ET. For the third time since 2008, the USGA has scheduled their most prestigious title to be largely conducted during primetime in the east -- a tradition started at Torrey Pines in 2008 and duplicated again at Pebble Beach in 2010. Due to the routing of the holes at the venerable Olympic Club, the split times will go off No. 9 tee as opposed to No. 10.

Morning wave off No. 1 tee:

10:15 a.m.: Scott Langley, Steve Lebrun, Beau Hossler (a)
10:26 a.m.: Jason Bohn, Raphael Jacquelin, J. B. Park
