French Open 2012: Top-Seeded Victoria Azarenka Defeated On Sunday

The women's side of the draw at the 2012 French Open saw some upheaval on Sunday, with No. 1 seed Victoria Azarenka falling in the fourth round to 15th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, 6-2, 7-6 (4). Azarneka, the winner of this year's Australian Open, feel behind early and was unable to recover, losing her cool so badly during the match that she was issued a racket abuse warning.

The 2009 French Open champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova, also fell on Sunday, losing to Italy's Sara Errani, 6-0, 7-5. This is the second straight Grand Slam quarterfinal for Errani, the No. 21 seed in the draw. With the loss by Kuznetsova, the only defending French Open champion left in the women's draw is Li Na, last year's winner.

It appears this year's French Open might continue the recent trend in women's tennis of different, and first-time, players earning titles. The last four majors have been won by first-time champions, and five different women have won the last five Grand Slam titles.
