The 2012 French Open quarterfinals finished up Wednesday afternoon with players on the men's and women's side headed to the semifinals later in the week. No. 2 seeded Rafael Nadal made short work in his match with No. 12 seeded Nicolas Almagro, taking him down in three straight sets. Nadal had to win a first-set tiebreak over Almagro, but it was smooth sailing from there winning the final sets 6-2 and 6-3.

No. 4 seeded Andy Murray fell short on Wednesday, losing to No. 6 seeded David Ferrer in four sets after a tiebreak in the second set.

On the women's side of the tournament, No. 4 seeded Petra Kvitova held off an upset charge by Yaroslava Shvedova. Shvedova took the first set 6-3, but Kvitova rebounded taking the final two sets 6-2 and 6-4

No. 2 seeded Maria Sharapova ended the Cinderella bid of Kaia Kanepi in straight sets.
