Penguins Weren't Top Contender For Zach Parise

The Pittsburgh Penguins were one of the teams hot on the trail for winger Zach Parise in free agency, but according to Penguins general manager Ray Shero, the team was never anywhere close to signing Parise.

"In terms of Zach, we didn't know what was going on until maybe later last night. They got together, did their thing. I guess we saw this a number of years ago with (Paul) Kariya and (Teemu) Selanne going to Colorado in a concerted effort as well. That's what they're going to do and we respect that," Shero told reporters on a conference call.

Parise decided to join Ryan Suter on the Minnesota Wild and pair their talents together. The Penguins are still in the hunt for a wing player to pair with Sidney Crosby after losing out on Parise.

Zach Parise Agrees To 13-Year Deal With Minnesota Wild

The Pittsburgh Penguins have missed out on one of the biggest free agency on the market this summer as Zach Parise has agreed to head back home to play for the Minnesota Wild. The now former New Jersey Devis defenseman has reportedly agreed to a 13-year deal that will pay him $98 million. Parise had spent his entire career with the Devils.

This past season, Parise had the third-most points in his career with 69, by scoring 31 goals and 38 assists. He could have been an upgrade for the Penguins roster had they been able to land Parise.

With Parise heading to the Wild, it really puts a damper on the Penguins pending moves as there were only a few players that they were looking to sign. The next step for the Penguins to improve their roster will now likely come through a trade.

Ryan Suter Rumors: Penguins Could Deal Paul Martin, If Team Lands Prized Free Agent

The Pittsburgh Penguins are still chasing two of the biggest NHL free agents on the market this summer, Ryan Suter and Zach Parise. They are believed to be one of a handful of teams with offers out to both players. If the Penguins acquire Suter, a defenseman, they could deal Paul Martin to Nashville, according to a Tuesday-afternoon report from Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Martin's name has been mentioned previously in trade rumors, though reports last week said the Penguins were not shopping him. The cost of signing Suter, should it happen, might give the team renewed motivation to deal Martin and his $5 million salary.

First, Pittsburgh would have to acquire Suter. There was one unconfirmed report from Brian Lawton early Wednesday morning that Suter had picked the Minnesota Wild.

Zach Parise Rumors: Is The Free Agent Forward A Package Deal With Ryan Suter?

One of two of the NHL's biggest free agent dominoes has fallen according to a Wednesday morning report. Brian Lawton tweeted in the early morning hours that defenseman Ryan Suter had agreed to a deal with the Minnesota Wild. The question now is whether or not Suter's decision, if the report is accurate, will cause the other domino to fall, Zach Parise.

In an interview with Yahoo's Puck Daddy blog, Parise spoke about the possibility of playing with Suter. The Wild, along with the Pittsburgh Penguins and others, pursued both players, although it would be tough for the Pens to afford both.

"Ryan's a great player. He's a top defenseman in this League. Those types of players don't come around often. They're tough to find. I would love to play on a team with a defenseman like Ryan Suter. Immediately, you have a power-play guy, you got a shutdown guy. Those guys are hard to find. To get an opportunity to play with him would be great."

The hockey world will again be on the edge of its seat on Wednesday, waiting and watching to see if this is the day Parise makes his decision.

Zach Parise Rumors: Free Agent Visits Minnesota But No Decision Made

The waiting game continues.

Forward Zach Parise, one of the most sought-after free agents in NHL history, was in Minnesota on Tuesday afternoon, visiting his home state, accompanied by his fiancée Alisha, according to the Star Tribune.

The Wild are among a number of suitors that include the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers and the New Jersey Devils, the only team he's played for and who drafted him as a rookie in 2003.

"There's a lot of things to factor into it and I think that's why we're taking our time with the decision," Parise told the Star Tribune. "It's not something we can just make at 1 o'clock on July 1. It takes time to make sure you consider everything and you're doing the right thing."

A contract for the New Jersey Devils captain is expected nearly $100 million and last from 10-12 years.

Zach Parise Rumors: No Decision Yet From Free Agent

Free agent forward Zach Parise told anxious reporters gathered outside his agent's office in Toronto that he had not yet made a decision. The hockey world buzzed with talk of a possible decision prior to Parise's Monday afternoon appearance, only to be slightly deflated.

Parise winnowed down his list to a handful of teams over the weekend. The New Jersey Devils, his former team, were in the mix along with the Detroit Red Wings and the Minnesota Wild, according to earlier reports.

Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that the Penguins extended Parise an offer that would be the largest for a free agent in franchise history. Seven other teams have also made offers, per Rossi's report.

Parise, who turns 28 later this month, scored 31 goals and 38 assists with the Devils last season. A first-round pick by the Devils in 2003, he has 194 career goals. He scored eight goals and seven assists helping get the Devils all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals this year.

Zach Parise Rumors: Parise To Talk To Short List Of Teams Monday

Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that New Jersey Devils winger Zach Parise will continue discussions with teams before ultimately deciding where to sign.

Of the "small select group" on Parise's list including #mnwild, Parise will talk to each team again today. This could take some time #nhl

That "small select group" includes the Penguins, who appear to be looking to add Parise to complement Sidney Crosby. A previous report had indicated that Parise might make his decision Monday, but as Russo indicates, if he's going to talk to each team, this might take awhile. If the Pens are able to land Parise, it would be their biggest move of the offseason. The Pens are looking to make a splash on the free agent market after making cap room by dealing Jordan Staal and Zbynek Michalek.

Parise had 31 goals and 38 assists in 2011-2012.

Zach Parise Rumors: Minnesota Wild On The Short List To Land Devils Forward

Free agent forward Zach Parise is reportedly going to announce which NHL team he will sign with on Monday. In addition to the Pittsburgh Penguins, a handful of other teams are on his list. Reports Monday add the Minnesota Wild to the list of teams with a shot at signing Parise.

The Wild announced on Sunday that they had made Parise a contract offer, along with Predators defenseman Ryan Suter. Reports also cited sources claiming that the Wild will not be outspent in their pursuit of Parise, who is a Minneapolis native. The team wooed him recently, trying to sell him on a young talent base and the chance to build a winner in his home state.

The Penguins are one team in the mix to land Parise, along with the Detroit Red Wings and the New Jersey Devils who hope to re-sign the forward following their run to the Stanley Cup finals.

Zach Parise Rumors: Pittsburgh Clamors For Penguins To Sign Winger

Dejan Kovacevic of the Trib argues that the Penguins need to "get this done" and sign New Jersey Devils left wing Zach Parise.

Huge upfront payments actually could work to the Penguins’ benefit, as they coincide with the final two years under contract for Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. Parise’s figure going lower after that will help.

Sure, it’ll be tight under the cap, but it will always be that way for this team. And don’t fret over other long-term financial implications, even if the local sellout streak won’t last forever ...

A winger who clicks with Sidney Crosby — and presumably then tops those 31 goals — is worth this investment, and yes, the investment is affordable.

The buzz surrounding Parise and the Penguins has been loud ever since the Pens shipped out Jordan Staal and Zbynek Michalek during the NHL Draft. Parise would be a huge addition. We should find out this week whether the Penguins end up winning his services. One previous report indicated that Parise's decision could come Monday. If he does sign with the Pens, his contract should be enormous.

Zach Parise Rumors: Agent Says He Will Make Decision Monday, According To Reports

Although the first day of NHL free agency was a quiet one for one of the most prized free agents of this offseason, Bob McKenzie of TSN is reporting that former New Jersey Devils winger Zach Parise is close to making a decision of where he will sign.

McKenzie says that Parise's agent hinted to Monday being the day where his fate will be decided, as he spent Sunday going over different offers and has narrowed the field of teams down.

Many believe that the Pittsburgh Penguins have been making a heavy push toward getting Parise, as there have been reports of Sidney Crosby and Parise's former teammate Paul Martin reaching out to him in an attempt to get him to sign with Pittsburgh.
