Chris Adamski at CBS Sports reports that the young QB, who was undrafted in 2011 coming out of Texas A&M, will get another hefty bout of playing time during Sunday's preseason home opener against the Indianapolis Colts and overall No. 1 draft pick Andrew Luck.
Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin had this to say about Johnson:
"Even though he's been in an NFL training camp, I think he's only taken about four preseason snaps," Tomlin said. "We want to see what he is capable of, we want him get acclimated to an environment and give him a fair opportunity to see what he's capable of.
"He's a young guy that's showing the growth and development that young guys show," Tomlin said of Johnson. "He's had some good days and he's had some days where he's taken a step back or two."
The Steelers know that Ben Roethlisberger won't be around forever and that anything can (and usually does) happen over the course of an NFL season. Johnson played the entire second half of the Steelers' last preseason game, a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 9.
