Team USA continues to hold a lead over China for the second straight day in the medal count in London. USA surged past the Chinese in overall medals on Thursday but the two nations remained tied in total golds won. That changed on Friday when Team USA had another stellar day, particularly at the pool. The Americans advantage in gold is now one but the Chinese closed the overall medal gap from three to one.
The big winners of the day for Team USA were in the pool, as Michael Phelps captured gold in the 100m fly -- almost certainly his final individual event. While Phelps winds down, we could be seeing the start of the next great swimming career as 15-year-old Katie Ledecky blew away the field in the women's 800m freestyle to win gold. Their work helps push the USA ahead in total golds and overall medals.
Here's a look at the medal count:
- United States, 43 (21 gold, 10 silver, 12 bronze)
- China, 42 (20, 13, 9)
- Russia, 23 (3, 12, 8)
- Great Britain, 17 (8, 6, 8)
- Japan, 17 (2, 8, 11)
