Kristy Robinson reports that pitcher Jeff Locke will be promoted from Class AAA Indianapolis to the Pirates. There will have to be another move to make room for Locke on the 25-man roster, but it's not yet clear what that will be.
I'm not sure exactly what the Pirates are thinking here, but it probably isn't a coincidence that this move is happening just as Kevin Correia is due to start against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. Correia making a spot start means the Pirates are short in their bullpen, and top of that, relievers Jason Grilli and Jared Hughes struggled through the late innings of Tuesday night's game. My guess is that Locke's stay in Pittsburgh will be a short one.
Locke was brilliant in his last start, against Scranton, striking out 10 batters over 7.1 shutout innings. He has 113 strikeouts in 125 innings so far this year.
UPDATE: The Pirates have promoted Locke and demoted Alex Presley. This will likely be a short-term move.
