2012 Summer Olympics Medal Count: United States Moves Into First Place

For the past week China has led the total medal count, but after a flurry of medals on Wednesday to take the total medal count lead with 81 to China's 74. China still holds the gold medal total by two, but the United States grabbed 11 total medals on the day, including winning seven out of 12 possible gold medals.

After twelve days of Olympic competition, the United States now holds a four medal lead.

Here's the complete medal count thus far, courtesy of SI.com:

  1. United States 81 (34 gold, 22 silver, 25 bronze)
  2. China 77 (36 gold, 22 silver, 19 bronze)
  3. Russia 52 (11 gold, 19 silver, 22 bronze)
  4. Great Britain 48 (22 gold, 13 silver, 13 bronze)
  5. Germany 32 (7 gold, 15 silver, 10 bronze)
