Marshall Vs. WVU: Geno Smith Wins Big 12 Player Of The Week

West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith has been named the Big 12's Offensive Player of the Week for his dominating performance in the Mountaineers' 69-34 win over Marshall.

Smith completed 32 of 36 passes for 323 passing yards and four touchdowns, as well as 65 rushing yards and a touchdown. All of this was accomplished despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter.

In addition to the Big 12 honors, Smith was also named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week and set the school record for all-time completions and touchdown passes. The senior's career stat line includes 651 completions on 983 attempts for 7,780 passing yards with 60 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

The team's next game will come on Saturday against James Madison at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Marshall Vs. West Virginia 2012: Mountaineers Roll Over Thundering Herd, 69-35

Geno Smith proved he's a man to watch in the 2012 Heisman Trophy race Saturday, throwing four touchdowns and running for another as the West Virginia Mountaineers blew out the Marshall Thundering Herd, 69-35, in Morgantown, W.Va. Smith went 32-36 for 323 yards, and ran eight times for 64 yards, too.

Smith found his favorite targets, and best athletes, Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey, and let them go to work. The dynamic playmakers combined for 19 receptions, 157 yards and three receiving touchdowns. Austin also had a 70-yard run that would have been another touchdown had he not tripped while making a cut.

Running back Shawne Alston also had a big game — sensing a theme, yet? — racking up 123 yards in 16 carries and scoring two touchdowns.

Marshall continued to work hard even when the game was far out of reach, and their stat lines aren't too shabby either to show for it. Quarterback Rakeem Cato threw 54 times, completing 38 of those attempts for 412 yards and two touchdowns.

Marshall Vs. WVU Score Update: West Virginia Leads At Half, 34-10

Geno Smith has been nearly flawless, Tavon Austin has displayed his jaw-dropping athleticism and the West Virginia Mountaineers are beating up their in-state rival, the Marshall Thundering Herd, by a 34-10 score at halftime. Smith is 19-22 for 180 yards and three touchdowns, including a beautifully lofted ball that Stedman Bailey made a terrific play on for the first score of the game.

Austin has been an all-around stud. He's busted free for a 70-yard run, which wasn't a touchdown only because he stumbled trying to make a cut, he's been dynamite on punt returns — he's had a 14-yarder and a 12-yarder, both replete with spin moves and cutbacks — and caught eight balls for 47 yards.

Marshall put up a good fight early, scoring a touchdown early in the second quarter to come within six points, but couldn't get any closer. Quarterback Rakeem Cato is 16-24 for 179 yards and running back Travon Van has 14 rushes for 38 yards and a touchdown.

Marshall Vs. West Virginia 2012: Game Time, TV Schedule, Spread And More

On Saturday, Marshall will look to do something it has never done before: beat West Virginia in a football game.

Marshall is 0-11 all time against the Mountaineers, and they'll certainly have their work cut out for them as No. 11 WVU is currently favored by 21.5 points.

West Virginia returns most members of an offensive unit that scored 70 points in the 2012 Orange Bowl. The offense is lead by Heisman hopeful Geno Smith, who passed for six touchdowns in that game.

Last year's Mountaineers offense gained more yards (6104) than any West Virginia team in history.

Marshall is also coming off a bowl victory in which they defeated Florida International in the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl. Rakeem Cato, a true sophomore, will lead the Thundering Herd offense.

The game will be televised nationally at 12 ET on FX.
