Penn State Scandal: What Is Franco Harris Thinking?

The Trib's story from Thursday (I missed it until Dejan Kovacevic re-tweeted it Monday morning) is something to behold. Franco Harris, who'd already spent much of the past year defending Joe Paterno and blasting the Penn State Board of Trustees in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, is now trying to visit NCAA board members -- all 18 of them, actually -- to get them to reinstate some of the wins taken away from Penn State as punishment.

↵

He's already attempted to visit the chancellors of UCLA and UC-Riverside, neither of whom would meet him. I'm sure very few of them will.

↵

It's a bizarre quest, and Harris appears to be staking his reputation on it. He's become like Tom Hanks near the end of Forrest Gump, running all over the country and growing his beard, except that Harris is doing it in support of a coach and a football program that harbored a child abuser. Absent their context, his dedication and loyalty are a sight to behold. Unfortunately, the context itself is incredibly ugly. Paterno has already gone down, and Harris, who has no connection to the scandal, appears determined to go down with him.
