West Virginia stayed perfect at home with a close win over Oakland.

With a 4-5 record entering Wednesday, it's been a rare bad start to the season for Bob Huggins and West Virginia. But things nearly went from bad to worse, as the Mountaineers barely hung on for a 76-71 win over Oakland.

The game was tied at 71 with just over a minute to play before Gary Browne hit a jumper. After the basket, Oakland did not score for the rest of the game.

West Virginia, who is now 3-0 at home, received a nice performance from Aaric Murray. The junior had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in the victory.

In defeat, Oakland was led by 25 points from Travis Bader. Entering the game, Bader was averaging 19.6 points per game.

West Virginia will now have games against Radford and Eastern Kentucky before beginning conference play on Jan. 5. Incidentally, West Virginia already played Oklahoma in Old Spice Classic and lost, 77-70.

The Eagles win their game in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Boston College grabbed a victory for the ACC, as the Eagles dropped Penn State, 73-61, on Wednesday night. The win is just the third in seven games for the Eagles.

Leading the way for Boston College on Wednesday was Olivier Hanlan, who finished with 22 points. The key to his success was getting to the free-throw line. Hanlan made 15 of his 19 free throws in the victory.

Getting to the charity stripe was part of why Boston College was able to pick up the road win. The Eagles made more free throws (27) than Penn State attempted (25).

In the defeat, Jermaine Marshall led all scorers with 25 points. His teammate, D.J. Newbill, scored 22 points of his own.

The Nittany Lions' depth was missing on Wednesday, though. While the Eagles got 20 points from their bench, Penn State only had 3 points from its reserves.

The win improved Boston College to 3-4, while Penn State fell to 3-3.

The Dukes try to finish the season on a high note.

The Duquesne football season comes to a close on Saturday, and the Dukes have a chance to play spoiler in their season finale. Their opponent will be Wagner, who will win the NEC with a victory.

The Dukes will have their work cut out for them. Wagner has won seven straight games, including a 30-0 victory two weeks ago that gave Albany its only conference loss of the season.

Duquesne is headed in the opposite direction, as it has lost three straight games and has beaten one team with a winning record all season.

The last two times these teams have met the Dukes have won, including a 37-21 victory last year. In that game, running back Larry McCoy rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns.

If Wagner wins on Saturday, it will gain an automatic bid into the FCS playoffs. A loss by Albany would also give them a berth.

The Steelers are not happy with how the expansion to Heinz Field will be financed.

Discussions have gotten ugly over a proposed expansion to Heinz Field. At the root of the problem is how much money the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Sports & Exhibition Authority will contribute to the expansion.

The Steelers are now planning on suing the SEA over the matter, according to TribLive.com.

A 3,000-seat expansion that will include a second video scoreboard is expected to cost between $38 and $39 million. The Steelers want the SEA to pay about two-thirds of that, while the authority wants to pay less.

On Tuesday, the Steelers submitted a notice that said they intended to sue, although the team's complaint has not been detailed.

The Steelers had hoped an agreement could be made sometime in October so the expansion could be ready for the 2013 season.

Despite the Steelers suing the SEA, the two sides are expected to meet to work on an agreement, according to Mary Conturo, executive director of the SEA.

The Pittsburgh made a surprising announcement on Thursday when they fired special-teams coach Al Everest. The timing seemed curious and even Everest couldn't see it coming, according to Pro Football Weekly.

It's highly unusual for teams to fire coaches in the middle of the preseason. When asked about the curious timing and whether he was surprised by the move, Everest said, "It was a surprise for me, but the bottom line is that it was about professional differences."

Everest was hired by the team prior to the 2010 season and was on the staff when it lost to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV. Prior to that, he was a coach with the San Francisco 49ers.

Assistant special-teams coach Amos Jones will take over for Everest. He has been with the team since 2007.

Jones will be thrown into the action right away as the team plays Buffalo on Saturday night. The regular season begins in 16 days for Jones and the Steelers.

Garner grew up in Pittsburgh and will be returning home. While he has played in 10 games each of the last two seasons, his impact has been minimal. Garner has just two catches and 45 receiving yards in his career. He has also played defense at Wisconsin, notching 10 tackles as a freshman.

He will need to sit out for a season before playing for Chryst and Pittsburgh.
