Penn State loses 79-69 to Virginia Tech.
Penn State came out of the half attacking the Hokies hard and fast, sprinting out on an 8-0 run out of the locker room to cut the Virginia Tech lead to three. Tech came back with a couple of buckets, though, and continues to hold a relatively comfortable lead in the second half.
Jeff Brooks finally got on the board for Penn State with a nice drive for a dunk. He was held scoreless in the first half and didn't even attempt a field goal. The Lions will need his per game contributions in the second half if they're going to come back on Virginia Tech.
Penn State is also watching the Hokies establish momentum on the glass, as the Hokies lead 20-15 in the rebounding department. If that continues, with as hot as VT is shooting, Penn State could be in trouble.
Virginia Tech leads Penn State in Blacksburg, 49-41.
Penn State has surrendered the perimeter big time early on in a crucial non-conference road matchup with Virginia Tech.
Tech's Malcolm Delaney is 4-4 from beyond the arc, and has staked the Hokies to a 44-33 haltime lead at Castle Colosseum. Overall, Tech is shooting a whopping 62% from the field while Penn State stands at a mortal 45%, which includes 6-10 from three-point territory.
Talor Battle and Tim Frazier lead the Nittany Lions with seven points each here in the early going. Delaney has scored 15 to lead all scorers.
If Penn State is going to make a game of this in the second half, it's going to have to play better defense in and outside the arc. Allowing Virginia Tech to shoot 62% is no recipe for victory, and this will be blowout city if the Hokies continue to shoot that well.
