Following a report by ESPN's Joe Schad early Tuesday that Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen is the frontrunner to replace Joe Paterno as Penn State's head coach, WAPT 16 in Jackson, Miss. is reporting an agreement between the two sides may be close.
JACKSON, Miss. -- Sources close to Mississippi State University's program have said that football coach Dan Mullen is close to signing a deal to replace Joe Paterno at Penn State.
Penn State announced the formation of its search committee to find a replacement for Paterno on Monday, so to say WAPT's report suggests swift action is probably a pretty dramatic understatement. At this point, there are no other sources suggesting a deal between Mullen and Penn State is imminent and just today Mullen declined to speak about whether he or his agent has been contacted by Penn State administration about taking the job.
