2011 Bowl Predictions: Penn State Bowl Future Cloudy Despite Division Lead

The Penn State Nittany Lions (8-1, 5-0) stand atop the Big Ten at present and own a two-game lead over the Wisconsin Badgers in the Leaders division, but as SB Nation contributor Samuel Chi notes, their bowl position is far from assured. "[W]ith games against Nebraska, Ohio State and Wisconsin left," Chi writes in his latest 2011 BCS Standings and Bowl Projections post, "[Penn State is] far from assured of anything." In addition, Penn State will face the Buckeyes and Badgers on the road, further complicating its road to bowl glory.

The Big Ten's top team will play in the Rose Bowl, in which the Nittany Lions last appeared in 2008, when they lost to the USC Trojans by a 38-24 final. Given their tough remaining schedule, perhaps the Nittany Lions are more likely to represent the Big Ten elsewhere. A No. 2 finish in the Big Ten means a trip to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl, while placing No. 3 would mean a visit to Tampa for the Outback Bowl. Should Penn State fall to No. 4 or 5, it would head to either the Insight Bowl in Tempe or the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville.

Though their bowl projection for 2011 is ultimately uncertain, it's nonetheless clear that the Nittany Lions ought to prepare for warm weather.

The LSU Tigers retained their top spot in the rankings after a 9-6 overtime win over previously No. 2 Alabama. The Oklahoma State Cowboys jumped the Crimson Tide to claim the No. 2 spot in the rankings after their shootout 52-45 win over Kansas State, to achieve their highest ranking in school history. Alabama only fell one spot in the poll to No. 3.

Stanford, Boise State and Oklahoma all stayed put at Nos. 4-6, while Oregon jumped Arkansas to claim the the No. 7 spot despite the Razorbacks beating ranked South Carolina. The Razorbacks only fall one spot to No. 8. Clemson, Virginia Tech and Houston all jumped two spots apiece to occupy Nos. 9-11. Penn State had the second-biggest jump among the previously ranked teams in the poll, jumping from No. 16 to No. 12 in the latest poll.

BCS Projections: Cincinnati In Commanding Position In Big East

Samuel Chi lists the Cincinnati Bearcats among the biggest winners in his latest roundup of the BCS rankings.

After their comeback victory at Pittsburgh, the Bearcats now have practically a two-game cushion on the rest of the Big East. If they can win three of their last four conference games (no matter in what combination), they will be in a BCS bowl for the second time in three years. That’s certainly not what Brian Kelly had in mind when he ditched Cincinnati for Notre Dame two years ago.

It now looks like the Bearcats are a huge favorite to win the Big East and head to a BCS bowl. Unmentioned here is the fact that things would have been quite different had West Virginia beaten Louisville on Saturday. If that had been the case, the Mountaineers would have been 3-1 in the Big East, with a shot at the Bearcats next week. As it stands, Cincinnati will still be poised for a BCS berth even if it loses.
