While the quarterback race was the marquee position battle during the offseason, the rest of the lineup was becoming set with some very interesting battles. Of note, the linebackers and secondary will be very strong thanks to some heated competition for starting spots. In the end, though, only 11 players can be on the field at one time, and this is what the two-deep should look like at noon on Saturday.
QB - Rob Bolden, Matt McGloin
RB - Silas Redd, Brandon Beachum
FB - Joe Suhey, Michael Zordich
WR - Derek Moye, Shawney Kersey
WR - Justin Brown, Brandon Moseby-Felder
Slot - Devon Smith, Bill Belton
TE - Andrew Szczerba, Kevin Haplea
T - Chima Okoli, Mike Farrell
G - DeOn'tae Pannell, John Urschel
C - Matt Stankiewitch, Ty Howle
G - Johnnie Troutman, Khamrone Kolb
T - Quinn Barham, Adam Gress
Earlier today, Black Shoe Diaries outlined some of the key injuries, as well. Four players were listed in the official press release put out by Penn State earlier this week, and a few others will likely miss the season opener with a variety of issues.
Pete Massaro and Garry Gilliam are likely out for the year, while Curtis Drake is still nursing a leg injury. Luckily (well, not for them), that is the extent of the major injury news for Penn State, a welcomed respite from last year's injury laden squad.
