Gary Williams Retires: Sterling Gibbs Leaving?

A big story broke on Thursday that long-time Maryland Terrapins coach, Gary Williams, will be stepping down. This was pretty unexpected and could have ramifications almost immediately.

One thing Pitt fans should keep an eye on is the status of Sterling Gibbs. Sterling, the brother of Panther guard Ashton Gibbs, was heavily recruited by Pitt. He ended up heading to Maryland, but now, he could be looking to transfer. Despite earlier reports, it's not confirmed that he is leaving the Terps, but Gibbs is at least thinking about the possibility.

↵

This is no done deal, but if Gibbs decided to transfer, would he look at Pitt? I'd have to guess he'd at least consider them. He looked at them the first time around when he eventually chose Maryland and if older brother Ashton sticks around for his senior season, that could be an added incentive.

↵

One thing that could prevent it from happening is that Pitt would then be over the scholarship limit (assuming Ashton returns) as they were recently until Jaylen Bond decided to attend prep school and J.J. Richardson transfered.
