Pitt Football Fall Camp: DE Bryan Murphy Will Miss 2011 Season

Aug 9, 2011 -

After all the talk about Big East expansion and TV deals last week at Big East media day, Pitt is finally getting on the field for fall camp. Things kicked off on Monday with a flurry of news and notes:

Perhaps the most important thing to come out of Monday's day with the media was that defensive end Bryan Murphy is not academically eligible and will redshirt this season. This is definitely unwelcome news as Murphy was expected to see a significant amount of time last year as a true freshman before getting injured early on. By all indications he's going to be a great player but Pitt will have to wait a bit longer for him to get on the field.

Murphy would have been a great addition to the team as he's reportedly been difficult to block in practices and along with Brandon Lindsey could have formed a potent pass rush. The Panthers have already lost senior defensive ends Jabaal Sheard and Greg Romeus to graduation and will need to find new players capable of getting to the quarterback.
