NIT 2012 Schedule And Bracket: UMass Vs. Drexel, Oregon Vs. Washington

There isn't any NCAA Tournament action Tuesday night, but there are two quarterfinal-round games in the NIT. At 7:00 p.m., No. 5 Massachusetts takes on No. 3 Drexel. UMass knocked off top-seeded Seton Hall in its last game, as Chaz Williams led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds, and Williams and Terrell Vinson hit key three-pointers with a couple minutes left in the game to establish some separation. Drexel blew out UCF in its first-round matchup, then squeaked by Northern Iowa with the help of 28 points by Samme Givens.

At 9:00 p.m., it's a battle of the Pacific Northwest, as No. 3 Oregon faces No. 1 Washington. The teams met twice in the regular season, with Washington winning the first game 76-60 and the Ducks blowing out the Huskies 82-57 in their most recent matchup, in early February.

Here's a full NIT bracket. The other two quarterfinal matchups, between Minnesota and Middle Tennessee and Nevada and Stanford, take place Wednesday.

NIT 2012 Schedule And Bracket: NIT Gets Underway Tuesday

The NIT begins Tuesday night, with about half the teams play their first-round games. After Pitt didn't receive a bid (winding up in the CBI instead), there aren't any local teams in the NIT, but as you wait for the NCAA Tournament to get started, the NIT is a fun diversion. Here's a look at the schedule for Tuesday.

No. 5 UMass vs. No. 4 Mississippi State, 7:00 p.m., ESPN2/3
No. 8 Stony Brook vs. No. 1 Seton Hall, 7:15 p.m., ESPN3
No. 2 Dayton vs. No. 7 Iowa, 7:30 p.m., ESPN/ESPN3
No. 8 Savannah State vs. No. 1 Tennessee, 8:00 p.m., ESPNU
No. 5 Akron vs. No. 4 Northwestern, 9:00 p.m., ESPN2/3
No. 5 Marshall vs. No. 4 Middle Tennessee, 9:15 p.m., ESPN3
No. 6 LSU vs. No. 3 Oregon, 9:30 p.m., ESPN/ESPN3
No. 8 Texas-Arlington vs. No. 1 Washington, 10:00 p.m., ESPNU
No. 6 Cleveland State vs. No. 3 Stanford, 11:00 p.m., ESPN2/3

NCAA Tournament Reactions: A Pitt Fan Reacts To Panthers' Absence From March Madness, NIT

Cardiac Hill reacts to the Pitt Panthers' fortunes this season, as the Panthers were passed over not only for the NCAA Tournament (as was expected), but also for the NIT. Pitt then, for some reason, elected to play in the CBI, even though little good can come of it.

The NIT all seemed like a reasonable possibility, but in actuality, was probably more distant than Pitt fans wanted to admit. When I saw a team like Valparaiso who was 22-11 wind up with a No. 7 seed, I knew that Pitt getting in wasn't likely. One thing I've learned about the NIT is that the field is actually better than we generally think.

Not that Panthers fans are going to get worked up about any of this. More than anything, what happened Sunday night, with the double rejection and then the decision to play in a tournament that even Duquesne didn't want to be a part of, simply demonstrates how poorly the Panthers' season has gone. At this point, the exact results aren't that important; the damage had already been done.

That said, I thought that Pitt would probably make the NIT, and SB Nation Pittsburgh even had a feature ready to run Monday morning about that. Making a deep run in the NIT would have allowed the Panthers the chance to end their season with a little dignity. Even if the Panthers do well in the CBI, it will mostly just remind college basketball fans that ... Pitt played in the CBI.

NIT 2012 Bracket: Pitt Misses NIT, Too

The full NIT bracket is out, and Pitt didn't make it there, in addition to not making the NCAA Tournament. Robert Morris also will not be participating in the NIT.

Robert Morris' absence isn't a huge surprise, but the fact that Pitt isn't there is at least a modest one. The Panthers had a miserable season, with a 17-16 record and a 5-13 Big East performance, and their only really big wins came against Georgetown and West Virginia. But their strong schedule should have helped.

Here's the full bracket.

1. Washington vs. 8. Texas-Arlington
4. Northwestern vs. 5. Akron
3. Oregon vs. 6. LSU
2. Dayton vs. 7. Iowa

1. Tennessee vs. 8. Savannah State
4. Middle Tennessee vs. 5. Marshall
3. La Salle vs. 6. Minnesota
2. Miami (FL) vs. 7. Valparaiso

1. Seton Hall vs. 8. Stony Brook
4. Mississippi State vs. 5. UMass
3. Drexel vs. 6. UCF
2. St. Joseph's vs. 7. UNI

1. Arizona vs. 8. Bucknell
4. Oral Roberts vs. 5. Nevada
3. Stanford vs. 6. Cleveland State
2. Ole Miss vs. 7. Illinois State

The first round will take place March 13 and 14.

SB Nation's NCAA Basketball hub has all the tournament info you could ever hope for.
