Pitt's football training camp gets underway in August.

The summer for the Pitt football program had been relatively quiet. That all changed on Friday afternoon when the team sent out a press release with a few pieces of important news.

The 'biggie' is that backup quarterback Mark Myers is planning to transfer from the program. Myers, a once highly-touted quarterback recruit, struggled in his brief time at Pitt. He redshirted in his first season and last year failed to get much time on the field. As a redshirt freshman, that's typically not alarming. However, with the many quarterback struggles, the fact that Myers was unable to get a strong look during the regular season definitely raised a few eyebrows.

Myers' transfer isn't all that surprising, given the circumstances. He was passed up on the depth chart by Trey Anderson last season, a true freshman with no significant offers until he was invited to Pitt late in the summer. Anderson earned a scholarship and, although he wasn't spectacular last season, he was still apparently better than Myers who saw little action in the regular season.

He will, according to the linked Tribune-Review article, attempt to catch on with a Division III program.

The other news is that offensive lineman, Juantez Hollins, has been suspended for all of 2012 due to a violation of team policy. Myers' story is probably the bigger one, but the loss of Hollins has a far bigger impact on the team. Pitt's offensive line is already extremely thin and without Hollins, the line gets even thinner. He appeared to have the inside track to a starting spot on the line and now, Pitt's left scrambling a bit just before camp starts.

The suspension is particularly tough to take because head coach Paul Chryst needs a strong line for his vaunted rushing attack, which is expected to be the focal point of the offense.
