Penguins Vs. Sabres: Pens, Sidney Crosby Both Extend Streaks In 5-2 Victory

The Penguins extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. Sidney Crosby extended his points streak to 18 games by recording an assist in the third period.

New addition Dustin Jeffrey scored his first goal of the season and the second of his career to kick off the scoring in the first period. Arron Asham then scored as the Pens jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

The Penguins ran their record with 21-8-1 with the win, and the Philadelphia Flyers pulled out an overtime victory over the Boston Bruins to stay one point behind the Pens. The Penguins and Flyers meet on Tuesday in Philadelphia
The Sabres cut that in half with a power-play goal late in the period. But after a scoreless second period, the Penguins tacked on goals by Alex Goligoski and Mike Rupp, with an empty-netter by Matt Cooke just before the game ended.

Marc-Andre Fleury notched 34 saves in yet another fine outing, and Jeffrey finished the game with one goal and one assist.

Penguins Vs. Sabres: Evgeni Malkin Still Out As Sidney Crosby And Pens Try To Extend Streaks

The seemingly-unbeatable Penguins take on the Buffalo Sabres tonight on the road at 7:00. The two teams last met on November 24, when Marc-Andre Fleury posted his first shutout of the season en route to a 1-0 Penguins victory. That was back when Fleury was just starting to get hot, but he has been excellent since then, allowing only one or two goals in all of the six games since he shut out the Sabres.

The Penguins will try to run their winning streak to a dozen games tonight, and Sidney Crosby will try to run his point streak to 18 games. Unfortunately, they'll continue to be without Evgeni Malkin. Malkin's knee was supposed to have been improved, and he practiced this morning, but he has been ruled out for tonight. In his absence, Dustin Jeffrey will center the fourth line.

The Sabres have won three of their last four, beating the Blue Jackets, Senators and Sharks but losing to the Bruins in overtime.
