Penguins star Sidney Crosby has confirmed what we already knew after we saw him in practice this morning wearing a black helmet, he has been cleared for contact and is eligible to practice with the rest of his teammates.
There is no word on when Crosby might return to the ice to play for the Penguins, however, and Coach Bylsma refused to even speculate. But progress is being made, and that is what is important.

There have been rumors for months, but now we finally have some solid evidence that Sidney Crosby’s return to game action is finally imminent. The Penguins themselves report that Crosby is wearing a black helmet – the one that typically means “it’s okay to hit this guy” – in practice on Thursday.
#Pens captain Sidney Crosby is wearing a black helmet like everyone else at practice. We’ll get an update from coach Bylsma after practice.
Pierre LeBrun, meanwhile, writes that Crosby has, in fact, been cleared for contact in practice.
Confirming the obvious: Penguins confirm that Crosby has been cleared for contact, but still no timetable for his return. This is next step
The part about there being no timetable for Crosby’s return is probably the key right now. There’s some speculation going around Thursday morning that Crosby could play Thursday night against the Capitals, which I highly doubt. He’ll probably need a few more practices before he gets back into game action. Nonetheless, this is amazing news for Penguins fans, as it suggests that the best player in the NHL will finally be returning, and very, very soon.

Ten months have passed since Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby was last able to play. A concussion suffered in January ended his 2010-11 season early, and he's yet to receive clearance to take the ice, even as the Penguins have gone through training camp and started another season.
But all that may change soon. Though previous reports that he'd meet Tuesday with a medical team to determine his readiness for full-contact hockey proved to be premature, the Penguins' cornerstone is indeed close to receiving that medical evaluation. Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports:
Sidney Crosby not seeing doctor today. "This week," he said. Still no contact for now. #Penguins
Even without Crosby, the Penguins are off to a strong start, leading the entire NHL in points (five) with a 2-0-1 record.
