After being forced to the sidelines for the final eight minutes of his team's 4-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh's Jordan Staal returned to the ice against Calgary and contributed a goal and an assist in the Penguins 5-3 victory Saturday night over the Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Staal collected his 200th career point assisting on defenseman Matt Niskanen's goal in the second period. In the third period, Calgary scored twice to cut their deficit to only one goal, but when Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff was pulled for an extra attacker Staal deposited the puck in the empty net for his first goal of the young season.
Pittsburgh improved to 2-0 on their season opening tour of Western Canada. The Pens wrap up their work north of the border Sunday against Edmonton. This is only the second time in Penguins history the team has opened the season with three straight games away from home.

In the second period, though, Tyler Kennedy fired a shot through the legs of Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff to tie the score. A power-play goal from Matt Niskanen followed. Craig Adams then scored, and Evgeni Malkin added a power-play goal of his own.
The Flames’ Rene Bourque scored midway through the third period to make it 4-2, and Olli Jokonen brought Calgary within one with about three and a half minutes to go. Jordan Staal scored with five seconds left to make it 5-3.
Marc-Andre Fleury had 17 saves for the Penguins. The 2-0 Pens will head to Edmonton, where they’ll play the Oilers Sunday night at 9:00 PM.
