Sidney Crosby Press Conference Shuts Down Speculation About Concussion

As of 1:15 PM on Wednesday, Sidney Crosby’s press conference at CONSOL Energy Center just ended, so it’s a bit early to be collecting reactions.

Probably the most relevant one so far, though, comes from PensChat:

The hockey media needs to take a chill pill now. Sid will be back. Now stop speculating on what you don’t know

Ironically, this came two minutes after another tweet from PensChat that said that “My guess is if Crosby plays this year it’ll be in March or April.”

But the point about not speculating is right on. This offseason, it seemed like there was a new dubious news report or piece of half-baked speculation regarding Crosby at least a couple times a week. This press conference will, at the very least, shut that stuff down. Now we’ve heard it straight from the horse’s mouth.

The only problem is, we still don’t have answers, because there really aren’t any. Crosby might play this season, and he seems to think he will. But we don’t know when.

Sidney Crosby Press Conference: Crosby Says It Is 'Likely' He Will Play This Season

More details from the Sidney Crosby press conference, where it became clear that it’s not yet certain when Crosby will be able to come back from his concussion symptoms.

Crosby says he agrees that NHL players should be more “responsible” in avoiding dangerous head shots.

Crosby also smiled at a question about whether he would more “likely” or “unlikely” to play this season, then said it would be more likely than not that he would play.

It sounds like there are many uncertainties here, and no one can really say what’s going to happen, except that Crosby will not play until he’s 100 percent, as opposed to playing at 90 percent or less. There’s even a chance his career could be over, but it’s far more likely that he will play in 2011-12, although it’s unclear when that will be.

Here is live video of the press conference.

Sidney Crosby Press Conference Live Video: Crosby Optimistic, But Admits 'Slight' Possibility That Career Could Be Over

As of 12:45 PM on Wednesday, Sidney Crosby is in the middle of his press conference, which you can watch live here.

Crosby has said that he is not considering retiring, fortunately. But it sounds like the concussion is still bothering him. His doctors say he "has work to do" before returning to the ice. It still is not clear when he will come back.

One of his doctors just called him "the Ferrari of hockey players." They want to make sure he is "100 percent" when he returns. Crosby says that "90 percent isn't good enough" and that he will not "roll the dice" by returning before he's completely ready. He shouldn't have long-term issues, his doctors say, but he still isn't quite ready to come back.

One of his doctors says Crosby has been an exemplary patient.

Crosby says the possibility that he will never again play pro hockey is "a pretty slight one." He says he's not worried about it, however.
