MLB Hot Stove: Pirates Reportedly In Talks With Jo-Jo Reyes

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Pirates are in talks with free agent pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes for a minor-league deal.

Reyes was recently non-tendered by the Orioles, who claimed him off waivers in August from the Blue Jays. He was 7-11 with a 5.57 ERA and posted 87 strikeouts in 29 games between Baltimore and Toronto in 2011.

For his career, which began with Atlanta in 2007, Reyes has a 6.05 ERA in 334.2 innings.

If he signs, the lefty from West Covina, Calif. will likely figure in the mix for the Pirates' fifth starter duties. Though Kevin Correia and Brad Lincoln likely have legs up in that competition, Reyes could provide depth in the event that Charlie Morton is unable to start the season and another starter is injured early on in the event that he makes the team.

Non-Tender Deadline: Pirates Offer Contracts To All Players

After a busy night that included trading Jose Veras to the Brewers for Casey McGehee and agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with reliever Jason Grilli, the Pirates tendered contracts to all their remaining arbitration-eligible players. Here’s the list:

1B/OF Garrett Jones
SP Charlie Morton
SP Jeff Karstens
RP Joel Hanrahan
RP Evan Meek
RP Chris Resop

This was the best possible outcome – none of these players will be expensive this year, and they all bring something to the table. Each of these players will now either agree to a contract with the Pirates or go to arbitration. In any case, they’ll all be Pirates next season unless the Bucs decide to trade them.

Jones will either serve as the Pirates’ primary first baseman or as a bench player at first and in the outfield. Morton and Karstens are members of the Pirates’ rotation, currently along with Erik Bedard, James McDonald and Kevin Correia. And Hanrahan, Meek, Resop and Grilli will form most of the right-handed portion of the Pirates’ bullpen.

Jason Grilli Agrees To Sign With Pirates For $1.1 Million

The Pirates have agreed to sign relief pitcher Jason Grilli to a one-year, $1.1 million contract, Ben Nicholson-Smith tweets. Grilli was very effective for the Pirates in 2011, striking out 37 batters in 32.2 innings, and $1.1 million is certainly the right price. If he tanks, they’ve lost very little, and if he’s effective, they might be able to ship him to a contender at the trade deadline.

The Pirates had a logjam of relief pitchers and had to decide by late Monday night whether to tender Grilli a contract. It’s not clear whether there’s any connection, but the news that the Pirates had agreed to terms with Grilli came hot on the heels of news that the Pirates had shipped fellow righty reliever Jose Veras to the Brewers for third baseman Casey McGehee, so it may be that Veras’ departure opened a spot.
