Brewers Vs. Pirates: Shaun Marcum Shuts Down Bucs In Ugly Game

The Pirates couldn’t do much of anything with Shaun Marcum tonight, but hey, at least the Pens did well.

Both Marcum and Kevin Correia had no-hitters going through four innings, and Correia’s lasted through five. But while Marcum allowed two harmless singles in the fifth, Correia’s first bad inning was really bad, as he allowed four runs, including a three-run jack by Prince Fielder.

The Pirates allowed another run in the seventh on an error by Pedro Alvarez and a double by Yuniesky Betancourt. Betancourt then came home to score on Marcum’s RBI groundout.

The Pirates had only four hits Wednesday night, all singles. The only real positives here were a caught stealing by Ryan Doumit (and even that was unimpressive, as it appeared that Betancourt missed a hit-and-run sign, leaving the ultra-slow Casey McGehee hanging out to dry) and a scoreless inning by Evan Meek, who had a couple of blowups in the first few games of the season and has missed the last few games due to injury.

Brewers Vs. Pirates: Pirates Face Off Against Shaun Marcum

Most of the city probably won't notice due to the Penguins playoff game kicking off tonight, but the Pirates also have a game. It's a new series against the Milwaukee Brewers, and it was supposed to start yesterday but didn't because of the rain.

Tonight, the Pirates will send pitcher Kevin Correia to the hill. Correia was signed to a cheap deal in the offseason and carried low expectations, but has pitched pretty well in his first two starts for the Bucs.

The Brewers' starting pitcher will be Shaun Marcum. Like Correia, he was an offseason acquisition, but he came at a higher cost, as the Brewers traded a good infield prospect in Brett Lawrie to get him. Marcum pitched very well for the Jays last season but has allowed seven walks in his first two starts this season, including five in his season-opening start against the Reds.

The game begins at 7:05.
