Lyle Overbay Now A Free Agent, Pirates $5 Million Poorer

Stay connected for news and updates

Various reports indicate that former Pirates first baseman Lyle Overbay is now a free agent. The Pirates designated him for assignment following the acquisition of Derrek Lee, and he eventually cleared waivers.

If some other team were to sign him, the Pirates would still have to pay most of the rest of his salary. At this point, the question is whether any team would sign him for any other reason than to have him play first at Class AAA. At 34 and with four awful months of baseball in his recent past, there's not much reason for any team to worry about him.

The Pirates will waste $5 million on Overbay this year. He wasn't even clearly an upgrade on options like Steve Pearce and John Bowker at the time of his signing, so the Bucs' decision to get him looked like a waste of money at the time as well.
