The Pirates lost their season finale 3-1 against the New York Mets Wednesday, as the Bucs’ awful offense flailed its way through yet another game.

At some point during the game, the Mets’ announcers pointed out that Pirates hitters have over four times the number of strikeouts as walks this season, and if the Pirates were to continue that pace, it would be the first time in modern history that’s happened. Sometimes one stat says it all — on Wednesday, the Pirates struck out eight times and walked twice, and generally looked awful in their at-bats.

It’s only fair to point out here that the Pirates’ pitchers struck out five batters and walked one. Jason Grilli continued his run of dominant pitching by striking out the side in the eighth.

Unfortunately, the Pirates were already behind by that point, as the Mets scored one in the first on an RBI single by Lucas Duda and two in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Kirk Nieuwenhuis and an RBI double by David Wright. Starter Charlie Morton finished with three runs and one strikeout in seven innings.

Andrew McCutchen drove in the Pirates’ only run in the sixth on an RBI single, but struck out with two outs and men on second and third in the eighth.
