Humberto Quintero Makes Apparent Racist Gesture During Bruce Chen Interview

Stay connected for news and updates

I missed this while I was watching the game between the Royals and Pirates Saturday night but ... wow. The FOX broadcast of the game featured interviews with Sunday's starting pitchers, Bruce Chen and A.J. Burnett. Both interviews were very good, even though Chen's was punctuated with all kinds of interruptions from teammates (while, incidentally, the Pirates were starting a five-run inning against them).

What I didn't see was that, right at the beginning, Royals catcher Humberto Quintero stands right behind Chen and pulls his eyelids to the sides, apparently making an offensive joke about people of Asian descent. Chen was born in Panama, but he has Chinese ancestry.

It's very surprising that a veteran player like Quintero would do something like this. He has to know about what can happen if you do something like this in front of a camera.
