Pirates To Promote Starling Marte

Kristy Robinson reports that the Pirates will finally promote top outfield prospect Starling Marte.

Just heard from a source that OF prospect Starling Marte will join the #pirates in Houston.

Dejan Kovacevic has confirmed this report.

Marte has posted a line of .286/.348/.500 in Class AAA Indianapolis, and that includes OPS marks of .944 in June and .924 in July after a weak month of May. His power this year has been outstanding, with 47 extra-base hits so far this year, and his speed and especially defense have long been regarded as plus tools. The main question of him has been his ability to control the strike zone, but he's improved in that area this season, with 28 walks and 90 strikeouts so far.

The Pirates have been reluctant to rush Marte, but it's still a little surprising that they've waited this long to promote him. His statistics are excellent, and the Pirates have suffered in recent weeks as Garrett Jones and especially career infielder Drew Sutton have bungled plays in the outfield. Marte will likely be the Pirates' starting right fielder, although his exact role hasn't been announced yet.

Starling Marte's Hitting At AAA 'Through The Roof,' Pirates Official Says

Dejan Kovacevic's latest bit of news suggests that Pirates outfield prospect Starling Marte's promotion is almost inevitable.

There is ZERO question of his readiness. It's about corner outfield and about not having a long pause immediately after he arrives. This person said Marte's performance at the plate right now is "through the roof." Marte has made several starts in left but the one Monday was his first.

"His first" in right field, presumably. If Marte's lack of experience at the corner outfield positions is holding him back right now, it's bizarre that the Pirates didn't have him play those positions earlier, since it shouldn't have taken them by surprise that their center fielder is playing pretty well. Also, the transition from center field to a corner should be trivial for a player with Marte's defensive gifts.

Kovacevic mentions another reason that makes more sense, which is that the Pirates don't want Marte to come up and then immediately run into the All-Star break. I'd expect to see Marte soon after play resumes next week.

Pirates Demote Jose Tabata, Promote Gorkys Hernandez

The Pirates have demoted the frustrating outfielder Jose Tabata to Indianapolis and promoted fellow outfielder Gorkys Hernandez to take his place, leaving highly-rated prospect Starling Marte in the minors.

Tabata has annoyed the Pirates and their fans all year with poor results and questionable effort, often appearing to run hard on certain plays while jogging on others. Tabata is hitting .230/.295/.341 this season. The move to Indianapolis will hopefully prove to be a wake-up call for a once-promising young player whose career should be developing more quickly than it is.

Hernandez can't hit at all, and is mostly just a defensive sub, so this move does little to address the Pirates' real problems at the corner outfield spots. We'll have to wait on either the promotion of Marte or a trade for that. In the meantime, it's likely that we'll continue to see Drew Sutton starting in the outfield.

Pirates To Soon Promote Starling Marte, According To Report

The Pirates appear nearly ready to promote Class AAA outfielder and highly-rated prospect Starling Marte, Dejan Kovacevic writes.

Just spoke with high-ranking #Pirates official, and I can tell you this: It will NOT be long before Starling Marte is in Pittsburgh. "It's time," the official said without specifics. In the same convo, it came about that Jose Tabata had better get his act together immediately or he's headed for the minors. The team is -- and should be -- livid with his lackluster effort. Sounds to me like an easy one-for-one switch.

I wrote Monday morning that the Pirates should strongly consider promoting Marte. You never know what's going to happen with promotions until after they occur, but Marte's numbers suggest he's ready for the majors. He brings a mix of skills that includes speed, defense and the ability to hit for average and a bit of power, so he could be an asset on both sides of the ball, especially since other than Andrew McCutchen, the Pirates' outfielders haven't done a whole lot.

Tabata, whose play this season has been mediocre and often very frustrating, would probably be the big loser if Marte were to be promoted. In fact, as Kovacevic suggests, it wouldn't be a shock to see Marte take Tabata's 25-man roster spot.
