MLB Trade Rumors: Shane Victorino A Possible Fit For Pirates

Rob Biertempfel tweets that the Pirates, who can really use outfielders, might be interested in the Phillies' Shane Victorino if they can get him for the right price.

#Pirates see Shane Victorino as perfect fit in their OF, but they are out of mix for trade unless #Phillies drop asking price dramatically.

I more or less agree with the Pirates' assessment. Much of Victorino's appeal lies in the fact that the Phillies really ought not to be asking a lot for him. His salary, at $9.5 million, isn't prohibitive, but it's mildly annoying, and he's a free-agent-to-be on a team that's going nowhere. He's also in the midst of a mediocre offensive year. Nonetheless, he's a consistently strong defensive player, which ought to be helpful to a Pirates team that has recently been starting Garrett Jones and minor-league infielder Drew Sutton in its outfield, and given Victorino's history, there's reason to hope his hitting might bounce back down the stretch.
