2012 MLB All-Star Game Score: Andrew McCutchen, Joel Hanrahan Chip In As N.L. Wins 8-0

In case you missed it, the National League defeated the American League 8-0 in the 2012 MLB All-Star Game Tuesday night, winning home-field advantage in the World Series for the N.L. That means that, if you like, you can half-joke about the Pirates getting home-field advantage.

The N.L. whipped up on Justin Verlander in the first, with a five-run inning keyed by a bases-clearing triple by Pablo Sandoval. Then, against Matt Harrison in the fourth, Melky Cabrera crushed a two-run homer as part of a three-run inning.

The Pirates' representatives, Andrew McCutchen and Joel Hanrahan, entered the game after that. McCutchen went 1-for-2 with a single and a groundout. (He nearly had an infield single on the second play, but was out after a great throw by Elvis Andrus.)

Hanrahan pitched to one batter in the ninth. I was faintly embarrassed that he was there, given that he's had an erratic season and probably about a dozen Pirates have been more crucial to the team's success. He was plainly excited in his appearance, and didn't have much control, leading to a wild pitch. But he was throwing 98 MPH, and his only batter faced, Billy Butler, struck out.

2012 MLB All-Star Game: National League Rolls To 3rd Straight Win With 8-0 Shutout

The National League rolled to their third straight victory in the All-Star Game on Tuesday night, defeating the American League 8-0 in Kansas City. The NL hammered Justin Verlander in the top of the first inning, putting a five spot on the board and never looked back. The reigning AL Cy Young and MVP was also wild, issuing back-to-back walks to Carlos Beltran and Buster Posey to load the bases. Pablo Sandoval would step into the box and take advantage by hitting a triple off the wall in right to clear the bases and put the Senior Circuit up 4-0.

Sandoval's teammate Melky Cabrera would make it a full-on rout in the top of the fourth when he ripped a two-run homer into the bullpen in left field. It was a banner night for the Giants' All-Stars. The NL pitchers then put it in cruise control and shut out the heralded AL lineup, which mounted few threats that would force Tony La Russa to alter his plans.

As for Andrew McCutchen, the Bucs' representative had a good night in centerfield and at the plate. McCutchen ripped a Chris Sale offering to left field for a single in his first at-bat. It was down the line and was a possible double but McCutchen had Chipper Jones in front of him and the veteran settled at second. In his second at-bat, he grounded out to third when he chopped a Fernando Rodney pitch into the ground.

The Pirates' second player in the game, Joel Hanrahan, got the call with one out in the the ninth. Terry Collins went to the mound to make the pitching change for La Russa. The Hammer came on to face the hometown favorite Billy Butler and he was clearly pumped up as he sent back-to-back pitches wildly to the backstop. But he came back to strike out Butler with a low heater, hitting 98 mph on the gun.

2012 MLB All-Star Game Score: Andrew McCutchen Singles In First At Bat

The National League led the American League 8-0 even before any members of the first-place Pirates entered the game, and the most memorable moment comes courtesy of Bryce Harper, who completely lost a fly ball in hilarious fashion.

Andrew McCutchen is now in the game, though, playing center field and batting second. In his first at bat, against White Sox hurler Chris Sale, McCutchen got into an 0-2 count but laced a single to left, but got stranded at first when Jay Bruce flied out and David Freese struck out.

R.A. Dickey is currently on the mound for the N.L. Joel Hanrahan, who I didn't think would play, was shown warming up.

The National League scored five runs off Tigers ace Justin Verlander in the first, thanks in part to a three-run triple from Pablo Sandoval. Melky Cabrera hit a two-run homer to key a three-run fourth inning off Matt Harrison.

MLB All-Star Game 2012: Pablo Sandoval, Melky Cabrera Lead N.L. To 8-0 Lead

Andrew McCutchen hasn't even entered the game yet, and the National League has opened a huge lead on the American League in the 2012 MLB All-Star Game, leading 8-0 in the fourth.

The N.L. scored five runs against Tigers ace Justin Verlander in the first, with Pablo Sandoval leading the way with a three-run triple. (Yes, that's right -- Pablo Sandoval tripled.)

Matt Cain pitched two scoreless innings for the N.L., and Gio Gonzalez followed that with a scoreless frame of his own. The A.L. got scoreless innings from Joe Nathan, then David Price.

In the fourth, though, Rafael Furcal hit a two-out triple against Matt Harrison, and Matt Holliday then singled him home. Melky Cabrera followed that with a huge home run to the left, putting the rout on for the National League.

Unfortunately, the first-place Pirates haven't yet gotten involved. Joel Hanrahan isn't expected to pitch, but McCutchen should come in at some point.

Stephen Strasburg is now pitching for the N.L.

MLB Home Run Derby: Prince Fielder Wins 2nd Derby, Andrew McCutchen Falls Short

Prince Fielder became just the second two-time winner of the Home Run Derby on Tuesday night, joining Ken Griffey, Jr. Fielder barely made it out of the first round, golfing a low shot out to break a tie with Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen and Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez. Fielder then went on to rip 12 homers in the final to defeat fellow American Leaguer Jose Bautista.

McCutchen had a solid performance but had a couple tough-luck shots that landed on the warning track just short of the fence. He also struggled to get the ball elevated, ripping the cover off it but hitting line drivers to and off the wall. The complete results below:

Final Round

Prince Fielder 12
Jose Bautista 7

Two-Round Totals

Prince Fielder 16
Jose Bautista 13
Mark Trumbo 13
Carlos Beltran 12

First Round

Home Run Derby 2012: Andrew McCutchen Does Not Advance Out Of 1st Round

The first round of the 2012 Home Run Derby is in the books and the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen was not one of the four finalists to advance. Carlos Beltran was the only National League player to advance with American Leaguers Jose Bautista, Mark Trumbo, and Prince Fielder. McCutchen's four homers tied him with Carlos Gonzalez and put him one shy of Fielder.

But the Bucs' slugger was far from the low point of the evening, as the two hitters (and team captains) who followed him were less than impressive. Matt Kemp sent his first homer over the wall when he was down to his last out but then had his night quickly end when he popped one up to left field. Robinson Cano then followed and was booed mercilessly throughout his at-bat by the KC fans for not picking hometown favorite Billy Butler. Cano became the first contestant to put a goose egg on the board since Brandon Inge in 2009. The complete first round totals below:

National League

Carlos Beltran - 7
Andrew McCutchen - 4
Carlos Gonzalez - 4
Matt Kemp - 1

American League

Jose Bautista - 11
Mark Trumbo - 7
Prince Fielder - 5
Robinson Cano - 0

Home Run Derby 2012: Andrew McCutchen Hits 4 Homers In 1st Round

The Pittsburgh Pirates' Andrew McCutchen finished the first round of the 2012 Home Run Derby with four dingers. The reigning National League Player of the Week started slow, with three shots coming up just short on the warning track. He also seemed to struggle to get elevation under the ball, pulling several rips to left field on line drives. Down to his final out, McCutchen added two more with the gold ball to stay alive and tie the Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez with four homers.

McCutchen's high school coach Jon Spradlin delivered the pitches. The Pirates' slugger was the sixth batter to hit, with Toronto's Jose Bautista setting the pace with 11 bombs. As for his NL teammates, Carlos Beltran crushed seven homers along with Colorado's Gonzalez who also hit four out at Kauffman.

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen Named NL Player Of The Week

This has been a very good week for Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen. In Kansas City for his second All-Star appearance, McCutchen was also named the National League Player of the Week on Monday. The team announced the news via Twitter.

From July 2-8, McCutchen hit .517/.548/.931 with three home runs and nine RBI. For the season, McCutchen leads the National League with a .362 batting average. He has 18 home runs and 60 RBI through 81 games. Thanks in part to his production at the plate, the Pirates lead the NL Central by a game at the break.

McCutchen will get more exposure on Monday night as one of four NL players competing in the Home Run Derby. He was a late addition, named to replace the injured Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton.

Home Run Derby 2012: Lineup, TV Schedule, Start Time And More

The 2012 All-Star events continue on Monday night with a handful of marquee names making their first prime time appearance in the Home Run Derby. Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen will be one of four players on hand for the National League after being named a late replacement for Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

McCutchen joins Matt Kemp, Carlos Gonzalez and Carlos Beltran on the NL team. The American League batting practice squad features Robinson Cano, Prince Fielder, Jose Bautista and Mark Trumbo.

The rules are pretty simple. Players get ten "outs" in each round, an out representing anything that does not leave the park. The top four hitters advance to the second round, and the final round features the top two homer hitters from the first and second rounds.

2012 MLB Futures Game Final: U.S. Team Crushes World Team, 17-5

The U.S. Team in the 2012 MLB Futures Game was supposed to have the dominant pitchers. Instead, it was the batting that became the main attraction at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on Saturday afternoon.

The U.S. Team cranked out 17 hits and scored as many runs in a game that saw 22 runs total put on the board.

Detroit Tigers prospect Nick Castellanos was named MVP of the game as he blasted a three-run homerun in the sixth inning which saw the U.S. squad put up nine runs total in the inning to put the game out of reach for the World squad.

Of the U.S. teams 17 hits, seven of those went for extra bases.

2012 Home Run Derby: Andrew McCutchen Will Have High School Coach Pitch To Him

After Andrew McCutchen was named as GIancarlo Stanton's replacement for the 2012 Home Run Derby, the next step was finding someone to pitch to him in the contest.

McCutchen made a decision quickly, as he told reporters Sunday morning that his former high school coach, Jon Spradlin of Fort Meade High School will be the one who pitches to him Monday night in Kansas City. McCutchen said that he joked with Spradlin back when he played in Fort Meade that Spradlin would be his pitcher in the Home Run Derby if he ever got the chance, and now McCutchen is following through with his promise.

The Home Run Derby is scheduled for 8 p.m. Monday night at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City and will be televised on ESPN.

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen will replace the Miami Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton in the 2012 State Farm Home Run Derby, MLB officials announced Saturday night.

2012 MLB All-Star Game: Clint Hurdle's 1999 Home Run Derby

In 1999, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle was just a hitting coach for the Colorado Rockies. Before his time as manager of the National League-winning Rockies and the current NL Central-leading Pirates, he was just a hitting coach that got invited by Larry Walker to throw for him during the 1999 MLB Home Run Derby.

In a story told to Rob Biertempfel of the Tribune-Review, Hurdle told about that day that became much more than an average BP session.

After Walker was eliminated in the first round with only two home runs, Jeff Bagwell asked Hurdle if he could throw to him. Then Jeromy Burnitz did. Then so did Ken Griffey Jr.

"We go to the second round, and I have three of the four guys in the round," Hurdle said. "I threw to all them. The last two guys? Griffey and Burnitz."

Without any Pirates in the 2012 Home Run Derby, Hurdle will probably watch this year's event from home. But maybe that's for the best.

"I threw 180-some pitches," Hurdle said. "I was there for 21⁄2 hours! I walked off the mound exhausted and dripping wet."
