Gunning for one of the National League's Wild Card spots, the Pirates were unable to keep pace against the Brewers, falling to 74-73 on the season and remain more than two games out of the final Wild Card spot.
Burnett did not pitch poorly, surrendering seven hits and two earned runs over six innings, but Gallardo was better, two-hitting the Pirates through 6 2/3 innings before being pulled in the seventh inning after loading the bases on a hit, a walk and an error. Brewers reliever Jim Henderson forced a popout to allow Milwaukee to escape the jam.
The Brewers methodically built their lead, scoring runs in four different innings and scattering 13 hits to build up their final six-run tally. Right fielder Norichika Aoki and shortstop Jean Segura both had two RBI and center fielder Jean Segura collected three hits on the night.
Brewers closer Jose Veras pitched the ninth inning to close out the game.
Just 15 games remain in the Pirates season.
