The NFL has fined Richard Seymour $25,000 for sucker-punching Ben Roethlisberger Sunday. As James Walker points out, that’s weird.
Steelers’ James Harrison gets $75K for hit in between the whistle. Yet Raiders’ Richard Seymour gets $25K for blow after whistle? Explain
Right. While Harrison’s hit against Mohamed Massaquoi was dangerous, it almost certainly wasn’t malicious, while Seymour’s hit clearly was. This decision is likely to reverberate through the Steelers locker room, as they’ve now been knocked up and down with fines, the threat of suspensions and phantom penalties, and the worst you can really say about most of the stuff they’ve been punished for is that they’re playing the game too hard. Meanwhile, Seymour hits a guy (a quarterback, no less!) after the whistle and gets a fine that is, comparatively, a slap on the wrist. The Steelers are already of the opinion that the refs have it out for them, and this will definitely reinforce that.
