Max Starks Could Re-Sign With Steelers

Max Starks visited with the Steelers on Tuesday night, and it's expected that he will be re-signed soon.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could re-sign former tackle Max Starks after visiting with the big offensive tackle Tuesday night. Starks had been a regular on the offensive line for many of the past several seasons (playing on two Super Bowl teams) before a neck injury kept him off the field for the end of the 2010 campaign. He was released this summer before the start of training camp, when he was significantly out of shape and still recovering from that same neck injury.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that this was more than just a friendly visit, citing a source that says the team will likely sign Starks soon. Gerry Dulac tweets that Starks has lost about 60 pounds, so he'll be in better shape to help than he was a couple months ago. Dulac also notes that Starks will provide depth and will not start right away.

The need for Starks was opened with Jonathan Scott missing the game in Houston with an ankle injury, and the resultant beating Ben Roethlisberger took from the Texans defensive line. It's expected that Scott and fellow offensive lineman Doug Legursky will likely return this week, but with so many battered linemen, it's looking like the Steelers will turn to the familiar Starks for insurance.
