Ben Roethlisberger Injury Update: Due To Sprained Foot, Steelers Quarterback To Wear Oversized Shoe, Metal Plate

When Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who's ailing from a sprained left foot, takes the field this Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, he'll do so wearing two differently-sized shoes. Via Twitter, Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review explains why:

#Steelers Roethlisberger will wear a one size bigger shoe on his left foot with a metal plate in the bottom to keep it from getting bent.

Let's review that last bit again: "With a metal plate in the bottom to keep it from getting bent." Yikes.

That ... that sounds not so great, and on some level one has to wonder if playing with such an orthotic could erode his performance if sustained over time. Then again, Roethlisberger played most of the 2010 season with a broken - not sprained, but broken - right foot, and he mostly acquitted himself.
