NFL Mock Draft 2012: Mike Adams Doesn't Make Sense For Steelers

Real Sports Hype's latest 2012 NFL Mock Draft has the Steelers taking Ohio State tackle Mike Adams at No. 24:

Mike Adams has potential to be a very good starting tackle, though he may be a slight reach here. However, I have no problem with the Steelers drafting an offensive lineman to protect Ben Roethlisberger.

Adams keeps coming up in connection with the Steelers, but here's the thing: They picked a tackle, Marcus Gilbert, in the second round of the 2011 draft. They also have Willie Colon for the foreseeable future. There was no doubt that the Steelers' entire offensive line was a problem this year, but part of that was due to injuries. It doesn't follow that drafting a random offensive lineman is the right thing to do, especially if they have to reach to do it. What they need is guards, not really tackles. If they draft a tackle in the first round, it will be because they believe he's the best player on the board by far. The Steelers don't always draft purely for need, of course, but if they do draft a tackle this time, it will be a pretty strange move. Depending on who's available, guard, linebacker or nose tackle would all make a lot more sense.
