Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney has released a statement addressing the death of former Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell. The Beaver County Times' Mike Bires passed along Rooney's words on his Twitter account.

Art Modell was a good friend to our family and he will be sadly missed. He was instrumental in helping the National Football League become what it is today. He always had league’s best interest at hand. Our thoughts & prayers go out to his entire family.

On Thursday, Modell's family announced the 87-year-old died of natural causes. From 1961-04, Modell owned the Browns/Ravens franchise, which has been a big division rival of the Steelers. His most famous moment came when he moved the Browns to Baltimore before the '96 season. The Ravens won the Super Bowl in '00.
