The West Virginia Mountaineers lost running back Dustin Garrison for their Orange Bowl matchup against Clemson on Jan. 4 in Miami on Friday when the freshman sprained his ACL and MCL at practice, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Jenn Menendez.
Garrison gained 742 yards and six touchdowns on 136 carries this season, good for a 5.5 yards per carry average. He went over 100 yards just once in his first season with the Mountaineers, but he did so in a big way, racking up 291 yards and a pair of scores on 32 carries in a 55-10 win against Bowling Green on Oct. 10.
The 5-foot-8, 165-pound back from Pearland, Tex. also caught 24 passes for 201 yards out of the backfield the season, showing he was a threat in both the running and passing games.
Menendez expects Shawne Alston to take Garrison's spot at running back when the Mountaineers lineup against the Tigers at Sun Life Stadium.
