Pitt Football Lands Another Big Fish In Running Back Jameel Poteat

New, 5 comments

Dave Wannstedt and Pitt pulled in another top recruit with the verbal commitment of running back Jameel Poteat on Wednesday. Poteat’s commitment had long been rumored and was made official today.

Poteat is rated as a four-star recruit by both Rivals and Scout. Both sites also rate him as the #15 running back in the nation and schools that reportedly offered him scholarships included USC, Notre Dame, Florida, and Tennessee.

Further, this signing further strengthens Pitt’s relationship with Bishop McDevitt. Other recruits from that school have included Lesean McCoy, Aaron Berry, and Salath Williams. Not surprisingly, McCoy apparently made an impact on him:

“I started becoming a big Pitt fan when Shady was scoring touchdowns there and everybody showed him so much love,” Poteat said. “We do some things alike. He’s shiftier than me, but I run with more power. That’s the person I model my game after, who I look up to.”

Poteat is Pitt’s third four-star recruit for 2011 and Scout now ranks their recruiting class as 20th best in the nation – even though it’s only about halfway complete.

Pitt still has a way to go to reach the recruiting level of the elite schools, but this is shaping up to be Dave Wannstedt’s best class yet and could wind up as one of the top 10 or 15 in the nation.
