Pirates Lose In Blowout, 12-4

The Bucs lost 12-4, as the Phillies hit well and were aided by costly defensive miscues by Bobby Crosby (who botched what should have been a double play that would have minimized the damage in what wound up being a five-run third inning) and Ryan Church (who misjudged a ball badly in right field). Alvarez’s first career homer and Church’s 3-for-3 night were the only offensive highlights.

The recap from the Sports Network:

Recap: Pittsburgh vs. Philadelphia
Sports Network | July 3, 2010

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) – Jimmy Rollins went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, three RBI and three runs scored, and Kyle Kendrick pitched his first career complete game as Philadelphia blitzed Pittsburgh, 12-4, in the third edition of a four-game series from PNC Park.

Ryan Howard added two hits and drove in three runs, while Ben Francisco slugged a solo homer and knocked in a pair for the Phillies, who snapped a three-game slide.

The 25-year-old Kendrick (5-3) surrendered 10 hits and three earned runs while fanning four and walking two to earn just his second win in seven starts.

Ryan Church finished with a trio of hits, including a homer, and Pedro Alvarez contributed a solo blast for the Pirates, who had won four of five coming in.

Paul Maholm (5-7) was battered in defeat for 10 hits and eight runs — seven earned — over three-plus frames.
