Rinku And Dinesh Get To Work

Here's a nice article on Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, the two pitchers the Pirates signed out of India last year. You've surely heard their story - as the first two Indian players signed to pro contracts, and as (probably?) the first players ever signed as the result of their performance in a reality show, Singh and Patel got a ton of attention last year. Now all the hoopla has died down, and they're concentrating on learning to play baseball.

The Pirates got a lot of attention for the signings as well, some of it unkind. But their bonuses, less than $10,000 for each, were tiny, similar to those of late-round draft picks. That's nothing worth worrying about.

Neither of the two guys have pitched much this year, which might indicate that the Pirates aren't taking them seriously as prospects, but the results they've gotten in limited work have been decent. Singh is the one of the two with the most potential, and so far he's allowed two runs in five innings for the Bucs' rookie-league team, while striking out five. That's not bad for a guy who knew nothing about the game a few years ago. Or, as Rinku himself put it on the pair's wide-eyed, excellent blog, "Good result of the pitching."
