The Pirates have signed young Mexican pitcher Luis Heredia for $2.6 million. I've already written about Heredia here and here, but long story short -- Heredia is a tall, projectable pitcher with excellent velocity for a 16-year-old. Any 16-year-old pitcher is extremely high-risk, but Heredia comes with tons of upside. The Bucs' decision to spend lavishly on Latin American amateur talent is welcome but overdue -- Heredia's bonus is the largest one they've ever given to a Latin American amateur by a country mile and their first to reach seven figures.
